Hi guys

Please help me. I read the posts on the nexus 4 forums but non specific to my issue. Heres what happened.
1. My battery died, phone switched off.
2. Plugged in usb from wall power socket to phone.
3. Get blinking red/orange light.
4. Leave it to charge for about 10 hours.
5. Still does not switch on.
6. Removed cover and unclipped battery for about 20 minutes, reassembled and does the samething.
7. Tried(http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-4/312151-solved-nexus-4-wont-turn-charge.html), which did not work as they said it would, but instead the orange/red light blinks once at the point of inserting the usb, then a logo appears on the screen saying "Download mode do not unplug the device till the process is complete", the logo disappears and the the orange/red light blinks faster, i leave the volume and power buttons and the orange/red light starts blinking slowly.

I have repeated this process multiple times and no luck :(

Please help me!

So i left on charge for another 10 hours, still no luck.
I then unplugged it, plugged it back in and immediately held the power button for about 20-30 seconds, and the google logo appeared this time, but then it switched off. :(

Another update, now after unplugging and plugging it back in, the battery symbol appears and the battery appears to full, but still switches off and wont boot. any ideas?

New update, i removed the cover, unplugged the battery and the charging battery indicator comes on, no flashing red light, but if i try to switch it on, it goes back to the blinking red light. doesnt sound like a power issue, i think the software might be faulty.

update: plugged in to usb, held volume up/down immediately, now its stuck on "DOWNLOAD MODE Do not unplug the device until the process is complete" :O will leave it and see what happens, will post update

It certainly sounds like you have a major problem, be it software or more likely hardware. Never heard of anything like your symptoms. My suggestion would be to call Google and ask for a replacement.

Main reason I replied to this is I wanted to ask are you sure you are in the right forum? You say you removed the cover and removed the battery but you can't do that on a Nexus 4. Technically you can, but it's REALLY hard to do.

Thanks for reply Davey. its very easy to remove the cover, simply remove the 2 screws at the bottom and start unclipping the cover, there are videos on youtube. I live in South Africa, there is no support here , bought the device from the UK so will try to resolve myself.
I have a new update, the phone is reassembled, tried plugging in usb, and immediately holding down the down volume button, i get to FASTBOOT mode. Secure boot is enabled and Lock state unlocked :)
Phone does not switch of now, which is leading me to believe there is a software issue.
If i select any of the FASTBOOT options, it shows the google logo and and after few seconds switches of and goes to the blinking red light again.
Is there a way to flash it from in FASTBOOT mode to another version of android, say 4.2. I am trying Nexus Root toolkit but it isnt picking it up. will keep trying though.
Also can only get to fastboot by the looks of it, to get to BOOTLOADER i plugged in usb and immediately press the volume down button and power, it shows fastboot and then tries to go to BOOTLOADER, it shows the google logo and then switches of back to blinking red light. I think my bootloader is broken :O
Trying out other software for flashing like http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html . hope i get some luck soon

Another thing which is weird to me maybe if someone knows they can confirm, my bootloader version MAK0Z20i
I googled it and found nothing :o, mmmm, seems odd to me.

Dude I wish I could help you but your symptoms are bizarre at best.
Btw there is no fastboot mode on the phone. Fastboot.exe resides on a PC in your SDK folder. You execute fastboot commands from your PC while the phone is in the bootloader, while connected via usb.
So, all these things you are saying about bootloader and fastboot are really confusing.

Hey happens to me when my phone dies but only for about 10 mins, I was also thinking if you are using the stock charger because other mini USB cables are different to the nexus 4 one and could stretch the port therefore won't charge

Hi Rizy7 and pashos24

I tried original charger for about 10 hours, then nokia usb for another 10 hours, also tried my car charger to, lol. same problem. the only thing that doesnt switch of is when i plug in the usb and press the down volume button. tried recovery mode, it shows the android guy with exclamation and then switches off and goes to blinking red light. on nexus root toolkit, i tried downloading googles image of 4.2.2 and tried to do a flash stock, tried soft-bricked/bootloop and on device is normal, used occam-jdq39-factory-345dc199.tgz, does its extraction, checks fast boot status and says device is connected and it opens the command prompt, and i get:

sending 'bootloader' (2188 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.139s]
writing 'bootloader'...
OKAY [ 0.309s]
finished. total time: 0.448s
rebooting into bootloader...
OKAY [ 0.001s]
finished. total time: 0.001s

then it tries to restart and doesnt, goes to red blinking light :O and pretty much stays there.
its so weird, the day it died i wasnt doing any updates or anything.

its as if the bootloader is messed up

thanks i get what you mean about fastboot. sorry i meant that i plug in the usb and hold down the down volume key and it starts. and on the screen below the green android chap it said FASTBOOT, so i just assumed thats fastboot. but after messing around i saw the fastboot.exe you mentioned.

This might have been repeated but you held the power, vol up and down, for exactly 20 seconds right?

- - - Updated - - -

also the same exact thing happened to my Razr M turned out to be a bad SoC and was fatal.

Hi purplehaze50o
Thanks for comment. Yeah i tried the power, vol up and down combo, it will show me "Download mode do not unplug the device till the process is complete", but goes away after 5 seconds maybe, then the red light stays on, no blinking and thats it. if i leave the buttons, it goes back to blinking.

Btw, whats a bad SoC?

SoC = System On Chip....My friend it seems like you have a faulty device. Sorry I cant be of more help I will continue to search into it for you though if i find anything will get right back to you..

thanks alot, really appreciate, Im going to keep trying, luckily its not end of the world, but if you find anything please let me know, i will try it.

next i shall try install ubuntu :D lol, that was actually the reason i got the phone in the first place, hehe!

A super old thread, but when I had this problem it turned out that if I took off the back cover and loosened the far left 2 screws just a little bit on the black plastic that holds in the mother board in, after that the phone would boot normally. I worked this out when my phone was all apart it would work fine until I screwed it all in.

Hey Encoded.
My Nexus 4 is also in same situation( Not chargin and red blinking light), and has the same bootloader version.
1. It started booting up, so i tried following
a) Power and Volume combination, then unplugging and replugging usb cable worked and gave me the 4 boot options:
b) Start, Power Off, recovery mode and restart bootloader.
c)I have tried selecting 'START', POWER OFF', and RECOVERY MODE', but it does not come up.
d) Once when i selected 'POWER OFF', then it came up with Offline battery charging, but that also went away after 1 minute.

Any suggestions from your side, if you were able to resolve this.

Ashish

Same problem here happend to me today. my phone was at about 50% battery and suddenly turned off after a phone call. not sure what to do next with the download mode screen. any suggestions :)?

edit:

while download mode was on, and the phone was plugged in to the charger I did the following:
-pulled the charger out
-long pressed power button --> shut down, phone turned off, and
-turned on by volume down + power button into recovery mode
-start from recovery mode.

worked for me.
good luck
