Newbie Questions

I'm new to android and using an HTC one that has been converted to Google edition. When I look at my battery life, the android system is always 70%+ more. Is this normal?

Also, should I have all the location services options turned on or is that another battery waste? Any other suggestions for maximizing battery life?

Any suggestions on really cool apps would be appreciated.
