Next Honor phone for USA?

It's too bad that Honor has not gained too much recognition in the States. It's very similar here in Canada, too. I have yet to see another person with an Honor 8; or an Honor device in general. Huawei itself, however, seems to be doing better with its Mate line. Not sure how the P-series phones are doing, but I sure like them! Haha.

It'd be great to see more of an Honor presence in North America. It's sad because I think a lot of users will merely go for "what's in" as opposed to trying something different. Sure, trying anything new is always a gamble; but with some research users would see that these products still deliver an exemplary experience - at a fraction of the cost of flagships like Apple and Samsung.

But as others have pointed out, we phone geeks are often the exception when it comes to doing lots of our own research and trying new or "unique" devices.
I do like honor but I can't recommend anything other than apple, and perhaps a carrier phonesimply because Huawei repair is not on par with Apple where you can bring it in and get it fixed same day. With carrier I can get a replacement next day. But with Huawei you gotta send it in, then wait for inspection and repair and them sending it back. This is fine for those with multiple phones but many people I deal with have only one phone.

Now if they are looking for a cheap phone, like the honor 8 right now then I can recommend it with some caveats. But the Mate 9 or mate 10 or whatever... Sorry can not recommend it to regular people without carrier support because of the higher price tag and warranty service procedure.

What happened with Samsung ?
Basically they had to suck it up and make phones with lots of carrier modifications. I also suspect less than favorable pricing but that's hard to tell. Nowadays though Samsung phones do have a few tweaks on carriers but nothing as serious as the older Samsung phones.

Well the carriers know the position Huawei is in and I am sure are looking to get one up on them. Same was true of Samsung years ago.... Gotta suck it up at the beginning and accept unfavorable terms, possibly losing money at the beginning.
That's true and that's why Huawei is not in any hurry to enter the US right now as their sales everywhere else are so good that to be totally honest they may even begin to think they don't even need the US market but I really think we will see them in about two years from now. That's fine though as long as they keep releasing some product here every year but it's not looking to be that way. Simply put they aren't concerned with the US right now at all.

You're right about Huawei customer service... I've heard some horror stories. But if I buy through my carrier, I may pay more for insurance but I guess it's still a gamble.

The real gamble is if you ever break your phone to even use the insurance youre paying for every month. I hardly do, and I've been paying for insurance for years. Spending that extra $10-15 a month adds up in a year time. And honestly I don't need it. A well protected case and tempered glass helps securing your phones

You have a good point. I've never had insurance on a phone. I usually take good care of them, so hopefully I can forego insurance for my next phone.

It's no guarantee though. Insurance is up to you, if you need it get it. If you can afford to buy a new one in case your current one gets stolen then then you can choose to take the chance and don't get insurance

Admittedly, I was a little nervous buying my Honor 8 unlocked because I knew my carrier wouldn't offer me any kind of replacement or anything if it were to break or just stop working. I believe there is a certain amount of risk associated with any kind of investment... But such is life, I suppose.

I have you looked at square trade?

I used Apple exclusively for years up until a year in a half ago and I'll be honest as of late I've been wanting to go back to them but since I don't do the carrier thing anymore it's kind of difficult to buy an iPhone outright unlocked because they are so expensive. If I could get an iPhone 7 cheap enough I'd go back to Apple without doubt. No worries about updates. Smoothest interface on the planet. I'm not worried about Apple not having any customization as that never bothered me but now that I'm with cricket I'd have to pay full price for an unlocked iPhone and that's just very expensive. If it weren't for that I'd already have changed back to what I know best.

Carrier apps, physical differences, removal of some manufacturer software, branding a phone under a completely different name...
Branding a phone under a completely different name ? Have they done that before with other phones ? I've never heard of that before

Yah but to me in my recent years if owning a phone. I've only broke one. Never had to replace any other phones. Paid insurance for years... almost for nothing.
