Nexus 10 playing trasferred video files

I thought it would be easy to transfer movies stored on my laptop to new nexus device and watch them on the device. My son was able to do this on his much cheaper Sumvision tablet. Although movies are showing in my file folder on the Nexus when I try to play I get the message Can't play this video. Following advice from GoogleSupport I downloaded file converter app but still cannot play video. Can anyone advise me?

The stock video player is limited in what it can play. ? use MX Player Pro and am able to play most of what I want to.

What format of video is giving you trouble? Avi? Mov?mkv?

Thanks for your reply........video is in avi format. Can I get MX Player on device?(sorry, i'm not very techy)

Just want to let you know I have installed MX Player and can now watch my movies! Thanks.....wouldn't have known to do this without your help.
