Nexus 4 back shattered within 24 hours - not dropped!

For all you saying that the person is lieng there have been many people complaining that the screen on the Galaxy S3 has cracked spontaneously with no drop.

I am sure this has already been mentioned all over the place, but it didn't register or stick for me until now -- you gave me an idea. People bold enough to go naked should consider getting those tiny rubber nobs for the back of their N4 if they have the original model. I am talking about the nobs used as sliding drawer stoppers, or I've seen them on the bottom of bookshelf speakers. The ones from IKEA are tiny and you can barely see them.
I most certainly believe you, as this happened to me today! I've had my phone about a month. I have been extremely careful with it because of all of the glass it has. It was sitting on my counter top while I was working on my newly tiled island and I heard the crack. I thought I had broken a tile on the island, but there was nothing wrong with it so I thought nothing else about it until about an hour later when I picked up my phone and the back was completely shattered. It looks just like the pictures you posted here! I was completely taken aback by this! Of course LG, the manufacturer, doesn't cover physical damage, regardless of how it happened and they want me to be without my phone for a month while they fix it and charge me to do so. I contacted my insurance carrier and they said they can't prove whether I did it or not, so they would have to charge me the $150 deductible; however, I would have another phone before I had to send them the one I have. This is crazy! I get that neither they, nor I, can prove that it "just happened", but if I'm not the only one this has happened to, then they should be aware there is a problem. They tell me they've never heard of this happening before. I can honestly say, as much as I love this phone, I will never buy another with glass on the back of it. Its a shame LG doesn't stand behind their product enough to replace it when they know this is happening. You all can say this is BS or that I obviously did something to the phone, but I was here and I know for a fact that this happened without any physical contact whatsoever. I wouldn't suggest purchasing this phone...just in case it might happen to you.
Yep, seems to be a growing trend here. If temperature can cause the cracks, however likely that may be, I wonder if installing a simple skin or screen protector would minimize the temperature difference or transfer to the glass? Personally, I haven't had an issue and probably never will. It's pretty consistent temperature wise here in Texas.

I don't have a link but I searched for "clear cabinet bumper" or "clear drawer bumper" and the idea is something like this: Door and Drawer Bumper, Clear .312" x .085" 25-piece - Amazon.com
Check all your cabinets and drawers in your house, and you'd be surprised that you might have them installed anywhere you have a sliding drawer or a cabinet drawer.I think any hardware store would have them. The ones that come from IKEA with the furniture you assemble are really the best since they are so small, but I couldn't find them on their website.
I don't go "naked" myself so I don't know how this solution would work, but I after I posted the suggestion I was thinking about it, and I realized one has to be careful if they tried to use "bumpers" like these since you would only fasten them on the back with the adhesive that came with the bumpers. I don't know how well the adhesive would hold up, especially with your N4 getting hot and cold when you use it. So if you used 5 bumpers on the back it might give a false sense of security -- one might come off and you might not realize it so you might accidentally set it down and damage since one of the corners is not level or something like that.

I have ordered a couple of Nexus 4's in the last month. One for me & one for my wife. Both had the new lugs on the back to keep it from sitting flush on a surface. I'm not sure this will stop any problems since it sounds more like a stressed glass manufacturing issue but it's typical of a manufacturer to deny there is a problem and then try and institute a work around on the quiet.
In the UK if a product has a manufacturing, or design fault then they are obliged to replace the unit regardless of whether it is covered by any warranty or is even within the warranty period - proving it is a manufacturing fault is always the problem.
I nearly didn't buy the nexus 4 because of the glass back (I didn't know about these problems). IMHO the slightly improved look of a glass back isn't worth the increased fragility. But in the end the outstanding value of the Nexus 4 won me over.
Aside - When I was 15 my Mum bought a new cooker - she went out a few hours after it was installed and left me a frozen lasagne for my tea. After it had been in the oven for about 20 minutes there was an almighty bang from the kitchen. I went running out there only to find the lasagne had exploded. Of course when I opened the oven door and the shattered inner glass door fell out all over the place I realised it wasn't the lasagne after all. I still ate the lasagne even though it was a bit cold in the middle.

Happened to me .
After having the phone for 5 months it has cracked around the speaker whilst in my pocket when driving the car.
To look at it you would think there had been an impact but there wasn't.
Have been back to Google about it but they have been unexpectedly unhelpful and are just blanking me and referring me to their legal department.
Its just one big disappointment.
There is definitely something wrong here as the phones are not fit for purpose if this happens.
Perhaps Google can't afford to admit there is a problem.

Laid it down on a flat surface, turned round five seconds later to my phone making a crackling sound like a bowl of rice krispies. Picked the phone up and stared at it in amazement as the back continued to crack for another ten seconds as I held it in my hand. Shattered from top to bottom, side to side.
Phoned Google (I'm based in the UK), they said "phone LG... but there's no chance this will be repaired under warranty". Phoned LG, they said "there's no chance this will be repaired under warranty". Phoned a couple more times and managed eventually to speak to someone vaguely helpful. Thought I might finally be getting somewhere- they had me send in pictures of the back (same as below) and the agent and her supervisor seemed to agree with me that there was clearly no point of impact consistent with the phone being dropped.
Phone was sent off for an in-warranty repair. Got a bill back from the repair company about a week later- apparently as it's physical damage (duh) it's not covered by the warranty. Phone LG again. Back to square one.
Either the repair company (Regenersis) have never come across this fault before, or they're deliberately refusing to acknowledge it exists. As far as they're concerned, a cracked back means physical damage, the user is at fault, and that's the end of it. LG say they're bound by the repair companies' evaluation, and are unwilling to press the matter any further.
All very dull. Eager to hear from any others that have had this happen and managed to have it repaired under warranty. The repair isn't even that expensive, it's just the principle of the thing that pisses me off.

Wow that sucks, just ordered one but I'm thinking of refusing the package due to the brittleness of the back. Sigh, I like the phone but don't want to go through the hassle if I'm unfortunate like some.
I think the number of people that have the backs break is a pretty small percentage of the Nexus 4 users. I had the same concern, and I just bought a Diaztronic cover for the phone. to protect the back.
Nice but I don't now. I want to keep it but I guess i'll just wait for the S4GE or get an s3 and call it a year.
last night I set my alarm clock on my Nexus 4 and set my phone on top of my PC facing down. When I woke up from my alarm ringing I couldn't get it to turn off because I had no touch resounds. Then I notice that my screen one long crack that wasn't there before I went to sleep. I didn't slam or drop my phone so I'm guessing that the vibration of the alarm and heat from my pc cracked the screen. I keep my room cold and the PC on.
Don't listen to those jerks. I completely believe you. Same exact thing happened to me. It happened while I was charging my phone at work. At first I thought that someone had dripped my phone and just not told me, but we looked at the cameras and nope. My phone looks exactly the same as your does. Crazy... If I weren't low on funds, id just replace it. Luckily it doesn't mess up the quality of the phone really, just a cracked back. I'm just going to buy a full phone cover and leave it at that. I put my phone down on a counter top too. I think someone just set a cold drink down next to it and the physics took care of the rest.
