Hi to everyone, first post!

Someone scared about Nexus 4 battery life too

I'm ""new"" to android (I just had a Wildfire long time ago, I can't consider that an smartphone...), im coming from an iPhone 4, a two years old phone with a great battery life. I didn't have email sinced but the rest was standar use. I didnt have to worry about having GPS on or not, having auto-brightness on or not, it was all auto and great:
I use google maps - gps turns on
I use endomondo - gps turns on
I leave the app, it turns off

music in the background, whatsapping all day long, foursuare checkins...etc
battery arrived to the night easily at 30-40% even more

Thursday arrived my Nexus, first day doesnt count, I started installing a lot of apps, testing evertything, showing it to friends, etc
First issue, I find it takes a long time to charge...I charged it in airplane mode and it took more than 3 hours to charge....OMG! is that normal? I wasnt using it, I was slepping
Yesterday night the same...3 hours to charge in airplane mode, I use airplane mode so nobody wakes me with a call and I was guessing being in airplane mode is the closest to be switched off

iortiz55, I have the same drain issue with the battery, I start using Whatsapp and I see how the battery goes down super fast....it's crazy...10%? in 15minutes? really??

I had GPS on for the apps when they want to use it, and also autobrightnes, and autosync...I only have wifi at my place...

Now im switching all this trinity (GPS,Autobright, and autosync) and see what happens but I dont like switching off stuff....I want to use all the features of my phone and get at least 1 day battery, no problem for me charging it every night....but I think I'm not getting 12hours...

I switched from iOS to Android looking for full integration with google (something I love gmail, chrome, maps, contacts) and freedom
Also I feel that android on Nexus 4 runs smooth and amazingly fast

But why they manage so bad the battery? why they have this autolocation reporting, history and blabla switched on from the beginning?
They should give users and phone pre-configured to last at least a day with normal use....no wonder why iPhone sell so much, they work great from the beginning, not having to look on forums for solutions

And why I cant have a percentage showing battery life in notification bar in 4.2.1? its necessary to download an app for that?

all this wait for 2 weeks to see normal battery...make full discharge and charge sound stupid to me....

If battery doesnt get better, im returning my Nexus 4 and waiting for a better android

I completely agree. It's stupid that you have to turn off all of your features but unfortunately that's the only way to get good battery. I have location settings off, sync off, vibrate on keypress off , Google voice recognition off, NFC off, brightness at 15 percent . And I can only get around 8 to 10 hours with 3 hour screen time.

I've had the phone for 1 week.Have been letting it run till 0 then recharging to 100% every time.And yesterday i got this.Granted this is with light to medium usage...i have still had GPS,sync,dropbox upload,most services on and took a decent number of pictures. Even with heavy use i still manage to give 17-18hr easily. I am quite confident when i pull it off the plug in the morning that it will last me till midnight at least with my usage pattern.

What am misunderstanding regarding battery & smartphone technology? Why is Motorola able to get such great battery life with their razor maxx line? Why can't anyone else do the same?

I'm getting great battery life after turning off push notifications. Now I can play around with it for like 10 minutes including camera chrome and it won't go down a single %.

Because the Maxx phones have huge batteries in them, like 3300 mAh vs. the usual 1800-2100 mAh cells in smartphones. If your car had a 50% larger gas tank, you'd be filling up less often, too. If Motorola had some uber nerd fu secret to long life, ALL of their phones would be like that. The fact that only the Maxx line last longer indicates something ordinary about how they did it, namely, stuff a huge battery in.

Ya to bad more cellphone makers didn't follow suit. The new razr HD has a 2,500mah battery and is what 8.5mm thick? That is still a very thin phone with above average battery size

If you have a battery problem it's your fault or your phone is defective. 5hrs of screen on proves beyond a doubt. Let's stop complaining and really check what you're using. Who said anything about 100% brightness? I have mine set at either auto or the lowest setting, still not getting great battery life. Sorry if that bothers you.

Personally I'd be fine with a phone being a little thicker if it meant a bigger battery, like what Motorola did with the Razr line.

I woke up this morning to find my N4 at 11%(!!!) battery after 8 hours from a full charge WHILE I WAS SLEEPING! The screen was on 8 minutes, but the phone was awake over 6 hours IIRC. This was at home, where I've got plenty of bars and it was connected to the wifi. I've seen people reporting that HD Widgets cause problems and I saw that it was using battery even though no widgets were being used, so I uninstalled it. I was still sleepy when I was taking the shots, but it appears the Maps drain that has plagued my Nexus 7 since 4.2 is happening here, too.

This was my third night with the N4 and it only went down ~15% the night before in the same location. I don't think the problem with the N4's battery is on LG's side - there is clearly a software cause to this drain and I think it's a mix of OS and app bugginess. The problem is trying to spot the culprit when everyone has 100 different apps on their phones. Sorry for the huge screenshots - Tapatalk didn't give me the option to attach them smaller.

Responding from your post in the other thread. So... I'll just say your Gsam looks a bit weird. I have NEVER seen Google Services Framework on my Gsam and yours is consuming 24% of your batt. Something off is going on there. Also, unless you're making a buttload of phonecalls, phone should not be that much, and I don't think should have a Wakelock. Maps is usually my #1 consumer, and that's because I have latitude enabled, just like you do. Do you see that Google Services thing every day? It looks like there's a login process there that might be what's wakelocking your phone, like it's continually trying to log in, which could also mean it's constantly using data, all day long. Let me know if you find anything, because yes, I agree with your other posts that it is almost certainly a software thing. My battery life is pretty uniformly great. It's a shame that Android isn't as bulletproof as iOS when it comes to errant apps wakelocking our phones, but that's unfortunately the price we pay for Google's extra allowed flexibility with background processes.

Btw, I just looked again at that Google Services program. That is almost definitely your culprit. 21000 wakelocks! And almost 2 hours of awake time, just from that. It looks like it might be related to Google Play, and the process is login. So yeah I'd assume there's an issue where your phone is continually trying to log in to Play.

Also, for those of you posting built in battery life screenshots, please post Gsam like DirkBelig did instead if you want help troubleshooting. The built in battery life only covers a few different things. It's not useful for debugging which particular apps are screwing with your battery life.

I tried switching to Airplane Mode last night while I slept and it dropped only 2% over 5-1/2 hours. So there's our fix, everyone: Turn it into an iPod Touch and don't use it!

But, seriously, yesterday's life was about 10 hours with 2 hours of screen on time. For comparison, I once used my OG EVO for either 5 or 6 hours with perhaps 55 minutes per hour of screen on and this was a phone 2-1/2 years ago. Sure, they're more powerful now, but we shouldn't have to baby them like this.

mine is ok so far. about 7.5 hours, normal settings with gps on and push notifications from different apps. Still have 50% battery left. screen on time about 2 hours.

I'm telling you guys... my suspicion is that the built in battery monitor just ignores a huge amount of background processes. My screen percentage is usually somewhere between 15-20% of battery, and my App usage is almost always about 60-70 percent. And I get a good 16 hours average usage. So please, it's pretty useless to post battery screens that just show your screen and Android OS as your main users, unless you're you have 5 hours screen time or are at max brightness, I can almost assure you that's not true. As far as I've found (after a year of having to baby my Galaxy Nexus to get it through the day), GSam is the only utility I've found that has allows me to track down battery drainers accurately.
