Nexus 4 screen cracks - defective - Google and LG do not take responsibility

I had Samsung phones for years, loved the, but when mine died in sept, Fido gave me a "free" phone, the nexus 4. First week i had it, droped about 1 foot, screen shattered, sent away for a replacement. Monday, i dropped it a couple of feet, screen shattered, thought i had the worst luck, sent away for a replacement. Got my new phone yesterday, not even 24hrs later, i dropped it, even though i was trying to be very careful with it. SCREEN SHATTERED. What is wrong with these phones, my Samsung could be dropped 20 times and not crack. i don't know what to do, but 3 phones, come on.

You have to be kidding. Who drops their phone that often? Get yourself a ugly rugged phone like a galaxy active if you are that unbelievably clumsy. You drop it every time within like a week it seems, of course eventually they will break. The phone is made of glass on both sides. Probably not a solid choice for a replacement if you can't avoid dropping it.

Droped my nexus 4 too. Completely my fault, im not even gonna claim something to lg or Google...

LCD is still good, only digitizer has hairline cracks, responds only on 30% on the screen.

Here comes the part where im not happy. No so called "phone repair" companies wants to only replace my digitizer, the ask 140-175 for the whole assembly LCD + Digitizer. Bull****.
What they don't know is that im an electronics technician myself and its totally doable...just gotta be careful not to damage LCD when i remove glass pieces + glue.

Fyi..eBay sells Digitizers + tools for 30$, and the UV glue is like 10 bux too. Suck it there "professional repair people"

Let u know how that worked in a couple of weeks :D. Gotta wait for fkin China to arrive...

Your little anecdote is cute and all but don't you think these companies whether it be a car or cell phone manufacturer know that their parts are substandard? You don't think they are planning for future sale on OEM parts by making bumpers you can't bump and screens that can crack and smash even without dropping them? Gotta say though.. I've dropped, flung and chucked my old iPhone 4 across the room, on the sidewalk etc.. and that glass is tough. If only IOS didn't suck so bad. :(

Sure the original post involved dropping the phone but come on.. Substandard is substandard.. Manufacturers need to take resposibility. $500-$1000 for an item that can break in your hand or pocket.. sad.

If you do break the glass on your screen get the entire LCD assembly. Peeling the glass off the LCD is next to impossible for a vetran. You ask one of those guys on YouTube how many phones they end up replacing the entire LCD assembly on after attempting to peel the broken glass lens off.

The build quality in this phone is really awful. I dropped mine from about a meter on LINOLEUM and the screen cracked. The crack is almost imperceptible but the bottom half of the touchscreen is no longer responding and it cost me more than half the price of the phone to change it. I had phones with their screens shattered working just fine and this pice of **** can't stand even a slight bump. I have no choice but to get in the trash cause I'm not paying that much on another such low quality screen

I'd just like to point out that I still have my original, day one release N4 and it is in almost mint condition. It has had on again/off again screen protectors over the years, but one thing it has always had, from daily commutes to trips around the world to beaches to slips and falls in the house is...

A gosh-darn mother-flipping C A S E.

Take care of your stuff people and it will take care of you.

i have had to replace the screen on my N4 five times. dropped from waist height the first time.. disappointing but understandable that it didn't withstand the impact; the remaining times the frigging thing breaks whilst in my pocket (screen facing in toward my leg); in a case; with a screen protector applied.

it's satisfying and easy to say "tough luck chump, you dropped it, what do you expect?" and the Mazda / fire hydrant analogy is a fine argument, but not entirely apt.

imagine you're showing your new Mazda to your little sister; she takes a walk around the car and says "nice... nice!" then leans on the bumper to ask about the mileage; the bumper falls off and somehow makes the entire car unusable; you can't start it, or even get in through the sunroof to access the junk you have in the glove box.

is Mazda not responsible for ensuring product durability to a certain reasonable threshold? should their product not reach a similar level of durability as comparable products?

it's like i'm walking around with a ******* egg in my pocket.

Your analogy is apt, but only to a certain point. The bumper is supposed to be a durable body component that will withstand a certain low impact. Turn that analogy to something more fragile like the locking glove box (or in my case a audio head unit button that half-busted when I jabbed it too hard; still works but is loose). If you lock the glove box, then after the car sits in the sun you try to unlock it, it won't unlock, you jiggle the lock and try the handle, no joy. Take it to the dealer who says you mishandled the lock, or were too rough with it? Were you? You dont believe so, you only tried turning the key in it opposite how you did to lock it, but in trying to unlock it, there was some force applied to some weak part inside the lock.

Who's responsible for the repair?

I continue to feel that as phones become thinner, and made from prestige materials, they become fragile and vulnerable to wear and tear that wouldn't significantly damage an older "soap bar" phone (Nokia) or flip phone (Motorola), most of which were built to be sturdy.

A friend has an iPhone 6+, and it is large and thin, even in her case! I really wonder how long it will last in her purse.

The N4 was sold cheap, so I have no expectation of it being tough as nails. I do wonder what kind of case you had yours in when the screen cracked. I sometimes put mine in a Dodocase Durables leather/canvas sleep, which I hope protects the glass front and back somewhat ... but not enough to protect against *bending*. I feel the Nexus 4 and 5 are more vulnerable to bending than other phones with metal frames. The Nexus phones haver brittle facia, surrounded by ... soft plastic. Not a lot of reinforcement there. :-\
