Does anyone know if the N4 will ever be able to use WiFi calling on T-Mobile? Their coverage isn't great at my house, so I would love to use this feature.

It's not native, but you can make calls over WiFi with the Vonage app. It even displays your number as the caller ID number. No porting or dealing with IP addresses. It just sends you a confirmation code in a text to link your phone number so it can display it as the caller ID when you make calls.

Vonage gives you 3,000 free minutes/month, and I'm on tmobile's 100 minute plan, so I make calls through the app when I know they'll be longer than a few minutes. I've found that the call quality is actually clearer, but the noise cancellation isn't as good. But for my purposes, when my girlfriend wants to chat for 30 minutes at a time, it has been great making calls from home. It can even use data, so you don't have to be on wifi to use it.

The only downside is that you can't receive calls through the app unless the person calling you is also using the app. Outgoing calls work just fine, though. I know this isn't exactly the answer you were looking for, but it could be a possible temporary solution.

This has been asked often. The answer is you will never see the native TMob app outside of a TMo branded and sold phone. It's baked too deep into the TMo rom.

The better answer is you can use Groove IP and Google Voice together to make and receive calls via WiFi or mobile data :) I rarely use more than 30 mins of my Tmobile minutes with this combo.

you can make calls using Viber also similar to Vonage using WIFI as well as your data plan.

How is the call quality? I've been trying to use the app for about a month, and most of the time, I get errors such as the app saying the service is unavailable, or it rings and rings, the screen goes black and the app locks up. When I am able to make a call, the quality is inconsistent on both Wi-Fi and HSPA, regardless of signal strength. The experience has been so lousy that I'm probably going to uninstall the app.

I tried, vonage..It sucks for me
I tried Viber..Its OK
Now I am using bobsled app and its by far the best in call quality.
However It doesnt show my number in the other persons phone. Either I dont know the settings or thats how it is..I dont know
but call quality is good

I just called T-Mobile about getting a signal booster for my condo because on the lower floor the signal is marginal. They are back ordered now so I have to call back in a couple of weeks when they are in stock. Anyway the person at T mobile said that they are currently working on adding Wifi calling for the Nexus 4.

Don't count on this. Reps are not the most knowledgeable on these issues. Also, the N4 is 7 months old. I don't see them putting a lot of effort into it at this point. Maybe the N5, fingers crossed.

What about Skype? I'm still waiting on my Nexus 4 to get here, but I used to use Skype on my iPad with their Skype credit plan. It was like $3 for a month of free calls or something like that. I used this option on my iPad when I went international 2 summers ago and just wanted to call home for to check on things. AT&T was charging me $3 a minute to roam on my cell but we had free wifi in the hotel room and this worked out well. Curious about the Skype experience on Android...

There are zero good VOIP apps. Some are OK about 60% of the time, but even with 0 jitter, 3ms latency, 50mbps down and 11mbps up (home network) I still got inconsistent, often poor call quality on ALL VOIP apps. And I tried them all, from GrooveIP, to SipDroid, Vonage, Skype, iCall, Linphone, Viber, Line2, CSipSimple, Talkatone and more.

here is what I did for my Nexus 4. We have NO, NADA, ZIP cell service inside our home. All carriers. So I went here https://www.getonsip.com/ and got a sip. Then I put that info in my nexus 4 under internet calling and set it to receive calls. Then I went online signed up for google voice with my new sip number being the "forward to" option. Then all the following is from within gmail...... I called my cell phone from my gmail phone chat..(had to download a plug in first) of course there was no answer because I am home and have no cell service Ha. So I ended call, went to call history, made my cell number a contact and set gmail to forward any calls from the contact to my (sip remember) number. So now when I am home with no service, and someone calls my cell, it goes to my google, which goes to my sip, which then uses my wi fi to go to my cell and voila! it rings! No one has to know other numbers... just my cell. :-)

Hey could you give me a more detailed step by step on how you did this because I can't enter my SIP info into Google voice because they want an actual phone number which Get on Sip didn't give me, and also when I put the SIP info on my phone it says it times out thanks so much!

The irony is that VoIP has the inherent capabilities to provide call quality that's far superior to the PSTN. I've sure never experience that -- not on a wired connection, and certainly not on mobile. That said, circuit-switched mobile voice also sounds lousy. That's a major reason why when I switched from Sprint, I downgraded to TMO's $30 plan: Mobile call quality makes talking a chore, so why pay for a bunch of minutes I'll never use?

How much data does that use? While I have an unlimited data plan, there is still that fair use clause.

I gave up trying to use it, so it's no longer on the list that shows each app's data usage. If I try it again, I'll let you know. I don't think it's much, though, because it's only voice.

I got the SIP account with getonsip. I put the information that I got form gotosip in my phone. Now, Could you tell me how do you set up a GV with your "new SIP number"? where do you get the new SIP number? Thanks, Victore

Not sure about outgoing calls. We have Google Voice and are using an Obi110n. We plugged in our VTech house phones to it. In Google voice we just entered our N4 moble numbers. Now all calls go to all 3 phones at once. We found this to be sort of a pain so we just unchecked the box in Google Voice setup. However, if an important call is coming that we don't want to miss and we are not home, we check the box and any incoming calls to our home number are sent to our N4's. I haven't tried to learn how to use wifi to originate calls yet though.
