With trading in old phones getting the nexus at best buy would be cheaper than me buying it on google play. I have AT&T so my question is if I buy off contract at best buy for the "Sprint" version, can I still put my att sim card in it? Just want to make sure before I spend money on it.

Its my understanding that there is only one version in the usa that works on T-Mobile Sprint and att...just not Verizon.

Isn't Best Buy charging more for the phone then Google Play? Why not sell your phone on swappa or craigslist where you will likely get more money then your trade in and then pay the lower price at the play store?

Thats the other thing I am considering doing. Have not decided yet, Only upside to Best buy is I can get it today.

You can try, but likely Best Buy will make you put it on a Sprint line per the company's agreement with Sprint.

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't believe Best Buy could make someone put it on a Sprint line if they are just buying it as what Best Buy calls a "replacement device." What are they going to do if you say "I'll swap the SIM myself, thanks?" Check to make sure you are a Sprint customer and, if you're not, refuse to sell it to you? The real question, why would anyone buy at Best Buy when they are charging a $100 premium over the Play store price?

From the phone sites it looks like the specs say it has radios supporting the ranges of all three major networks (AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile).

That is kinda what I said. Sell your phone yourself (and get more money) and order from the play store and save $100. Yeah it might be a couple of weeks before you get a phone but between the money you will leave on the table trading in your phone rather then selling and then paying more then you have to for the Nexus you are making a cheap phone quite expensive.

I work for BBY Mobile, and yes, that's exactly what they'll make you do.
The customer has to leave the store with the device (in this case, the N5) active on a line with Sprint. This is per the agreement that allows BBY to carry these phones.

This will depend on your rep I suppose. I'm sure what you are saying is true but I went online and ordered it for in store pickup. Then wash walked in and got it. They never even ask asked for my mobile number, just asked if I needed help setting it up to which I said no and walked out with it still sealed in the box.

I don't even have a Sprint account BTW
I'm using it on Att

Then consider yourself lucky, because at the BBY I work at (and those that follow corporate policy) that would never have happened.
Walking out of the store with it sealed in-box is something that just doesn't happen. But I'm glad you were able to get it that way.

I picked one up today. Bought it outright and am using it on T-Mobile.

A good friend of mine had a huge store credit at Best Buy (long story) and decided to use some of his credit for the Nexus 5.

It took the store GM to approve the sale before my friend could walk out of the store with the handset still sealed in the box.

My friend ordered the device off of BBY.com and selected in-store pickup. Nowhere on the receipt did it show activation required and upon receiving the email that the item was ready for pickup did the fun begin.

Essentially after arguing with about everyone at the store, they called the GM who came out examined the BBY.com receipt for any verbiage allowing him to deny the sale and only after that failing did be approve the sale.

Collectively my friend spent about 3 hours at the store to buy an item and IMHO it should not have been that hard. Either ensure all sales channels follow the same rules or do not obstruct the customer.

BEST BUY, should really be called We Make It Hard To Buy.

how much did he pay? what carrier is he on/new/old contract?

does Best Buy have any OEM Nexus 5 accessories yet? i'd love to see that wireless charger show up.

Which is why their stock prices are down.

Uh, no.

Last year BBY was at $11 per share... now at $42.41 per share.
I don't agree with everything they do (a lot of things actually) but the stock continues to soar upwards.

Op, just tell them you want it off contract and they should sell you one. Also, keep in mind that people have reported a successful price match with the Play Store price. It doesn't hurt to ask for a price match with the Play Store.
