Their claim was it was to stop re-sellers. I sat there in amazement as I told them I'm not a reseller I'm buying one device. And secondly what do you care? I'm paying full price for a phone your getting more money from me anyways.

I see I can buy it and do in-store pickup which means the device will be at the front customer service area. I'm so tempted to buy it from that store and then walk by the mobile area with saying "neener neener neener"

Only issue is I want to cancel with Google Play first and want to make sure the money will go right back to my card (as it's in the pending state).

You are absolutely right. What do they care if you want to resell it? Most likely it's going to be resold at some point anyway.

I'd assume they didn't want to sell it so they could buy it and resell it themselves. They tried doing that with the touchpads that hp had a fire sale for, jokes on them as we ended up with 20+ touchpads.

That's exactly what Best Busy is doing the only difference here is that you have a better chance of getting best Buy to price match than you have getting a carrier to do so.

Agreed but 3rd party retailers like best buy actually prefer to sell to someone who's starting or renewing a contract than outright which is why their outright cost is always listed so much higher. I think they make more money in the long run from the service providers than just selling a device. But I'm with you guys as I been stopped trying best buy when trying to get a new device off contract and price matching. Always been turned down.

I have to admit that I am very surprised that my buddy got a response from Hubert Joly (CEO of Best Buy) after emailing him and relaying his experience at his local BBY.

Essentially Mr. Joly apologized for the poor experience and offered a small token of BBY's appreciation for my friends business (a gift card).

The take away is that Mr. Joly made it clear that BBY does not have any corporate level policies which forbid the sales of handsets without activation on a carrier, with the one exception of carrier mandates, which he checked is not applicable to the Nexus 5.

While I applaud Mr. Joly (or his representative) for taking the time to personally respond to my friend, it is more proof that BBY needs to ensure that Corporate policy is adhered to rather than local management "making up rules that can annoy customers and create ill will towards the brand and potential loss of sales.

So here is what happened to me considering I started all of this with this thread. I had an Iphone 4 which Best buy offered me $115 for (decent for a 8 gig iphone 4) I also had a $100 gift card from the past that I just never used due to buying movies online now. So I wanted to get a Nexus 5 for around $200 off contract.
I was told by multiple Best Buy stores that I would not be able to purchase it even at full price without a sprint number and or log in information. Even though I told them I did not want to use a upgrade and I wanted to buy the phone outright.

I work for bestbuy also, we make more off signing the customer up for a 2 year agreement then selling outright, I truly think it varies by locations, I wouldn't let a customer walk when they're paying full retail, by the way bestbuy mobile does price match online competitors...

You mean you wouldn't let a customer walk out of the store without activating it? Or wouldn't let a customer leave without buying the device?

I was told by 2 out of the 3 best buys I went to this weekend that they wont price match.

Secondly if the rule is to activate no matter what (which is stupid because I could get around that with in-store pickup). Then the employees need to know what they are talking about instead of ganging up on a customer when they provide proof the device DOES work on ATT and T-Mobile (Which I was using to try and make them understand WHY I didn't want to activate.)

I even went with the "Im buying this as a gift full price" after multiple stores wouldnt let me buy when telling them I do not have sprint or want sprint. It is crazy that I could not even get a gift for somebody, even if that was not what I wanted to do at all. It does not make sense to me. Im giving you $450 let me give it to you.

Yep I even used that line at one of the Best Buy stores. Best Buy REALLY needs to train their employees better. That's ok though Google Play got my money and instead of a 16GB I got a 32GB (white) and I saved $15 bucks (that's after taxes and shipping and all that stuff)

I hear ya, they are it's a convenient place to shop. However, with this bull-crap they are pulling with the N5 other places will get my money instead of them.

I woudnt let a customer walk! My understanding is that all phones activated with a 2 year agreement must be activated but retail purchases don't.

If I was activating on a contract that would have made complete sense to me and I would have done it. However, I'm not with Sprint and had no need to activate hence why I was purchasing it outright.

Well too bad you don't work at one of the stores I went to otherwise Best Buy would have gotten my business. Seriously the store folks need to be trained a heck of a lot better than they already are.
