Nexus 5: Dispelling the Myths

lol, sure, just rename every complaint to some other name.

lets just agree its an average to above average phone and stop apologizing.

I rooted my nexus 4 and regretted it when the OTA came out. Upgrading to a new OS version is kind of a hassle when rooted. So I don't root unless I have a specific reason to anymore. My Nexus 4 is still not even on 4.3.

I may root for that camera though.

I root because there are apps that I honestly wouldn't use Android with because there aren't viable, free options. I don't care much about the OTAs. I'll just either flash the stock image that inevitably will be produced or unroot, upgrade and reroot LOL. Like clockwork for me.

Adranalyne, your thread is spot on! :)

Totally agree on the screen. There's people that love overly saturated screens (like what's on my wife's GS4), but I like the more natural way things are displayed in the Nexus 5. The camera I feel could be better with a software update (either by Google, a 3rd party like Focal, or an apk from the devs out there), but it is good enough for what I do. The battery is decent enough, getting about the same figures you all are getting. Could it have been better if it had something the size of the LG G2? Sure, but even when the specs were leaked months ago, I didn't find 2300 mAh to be a deal-breaker for me. The internal storage was my concern, and I was glad to see a 32 GB option when it was official. The OS works the way I expected it to be, the SoC and graphics can take whatever graphics-intensive game I can throw at it. All in all, I don't regret getting the Nexus 5, and your thread reinforced the sentiments I have.

It's above average. :D It's an excellent phone.

There are just as many issues/complaints with every other phone but since a huge number of people don't become owners all at once, as did with the n5, the complaints are more spread out and less noticeable-seeming.

I think the phone is quite good and as always it depends on personal taste and what you want of a phone.
The two things that bother me the most are:
- very low speaker volume and just mono sound (just one speaker)
- pure video recording quality (stuters a lot very bad) might be fixed via software update

After all i will keep this phone as my second phone and hoping for a software update to fix some of the issues.

Good. As long as people are making informed decisions, it's all good.

I have a rooted N7 which has updated OTA 3-4 times. After the update I restore root with VooDoo, but I have stock OS. The slow shutter is due to image stabilization.

That interesting. Video recording is excellent on my hand, and it seems the video recording capabilities have been praised in almost every tech blog.

And you say one speaker is bad, but, outside the HTC One, what smartphones feature stereo speakers? Hint: Maybe none? The standard is one speaker, I'm not sure you can saw that's a negative when almost no other manufacturer uses stereo speakers.

On mine, the OTA would not even run. I got a notification for it, but it failed every time. It was not a matter of risking a loss of root...it would not even install for me.

This is during the work week. So I am either at home or at work, both have wifi. And while at work I do not use my phone very much, I have my computer and tablet that I use. I forgot to grab a screen on the screen on time, but it was about 5 hours. In general I would say that this is my average use.

You literally doubled my total time (28 hours) and almost doubled my on screen time (3 hours and 30 minutes). I'll reserve judgment if you have it rooted/underclocked with a different kernel, but with a stock device, I can't see anyone pulling those times. 28 hours with 3 hours and 30 minutes of on screen time is pretty damn good, but saying you can almost double that with a stock device is rather unbelieveable.

That was last week. I have yet to come close to that again. I am running about 36 hours on average. I am running completely stock. I am not a heavy user, I was always able to get good life out of my N4 and my GNVerizon. Way more than what everyone else would normally say.

This battery discharge I will be sure to get all of the info. As I am writing this I am at 18hours with 78% charge. So tomorrow evening it might be drained.

When you finish this charge cycle, take a screen shot of your on-screen time, too. If you're getting 2 days+ and having the screen on for 5 hours, you're getting far better battery life than anyone else using a stock Nexus 5.

ART helps significantly while the phone is in standby. The only kicker is I can't use Titanium Backup Pro, ironically. Anyways, here's my usage including being on wifi and in fringe LTE service at work...

ART definitely helps. I plan to stay on it.

I got 5 hours 40 minutes screen time with the screen on full and moderate use (with LTE on the whole time). This is completely stock with ART enabled. I could easily see that stretching into 2 days with lowered/auto brightness and light use.

I think the "2 day" value is kinda misleading...it includes nights when the phone is not in use. And the nexus really shines in conserving battery while idle. It is normal for me to lose no charge overnight...not even 1%.

Ok, now after the comments I am thinking that I must have been wrong on the screen time. I know one of my charge cycles was 5 hours. Either way I am still impressed with the battery life that I am getting.

Camera quality comparison...these are the HDR samples Jerry took in his "Moto X vs Nexus 5" story. They are cropped but otherwise unaltered.
