Received 4.4.2 OTA this morning on the Nexus 5. I haven't received the update to 4.4.2 on the Nexus 7 yet. Perhaps that will make a difference. I never noticed the slow performance of my Nexus 7 until I purchased the Nexus 5. Both have 32GB. The Nexus 7 has 8.9GB used, 19GB available. The Nexus 5 has 2.7GB used; 24 GB free. The Nexus 5 is lightning fast accessing apps and accessing pages on Chrome or Firefox compared to the Nexus 7. Both using WiFi. Is this a common observation? If not are there suggestions for improving the performance on the Nexus 7. Neither device is rooted and I don't think I will go that route.

Better hardware on the 5 I believe. wouldn't think it would be that significant as you make it sound, then again I am assuming you are talking about the 2013 Nexus 7

I have Nexus 5 and a 2012 Nexus 7. The Nexus 5 is the current state of the art performance with a faster CPU, faster GPU at a higher clocking rate plus double the ram memory at 2GB. The Nexus 5 is just faster than both the 2012 and 2013 version on the Nexus 7 with slower CPU. If seem the new ART run time on Android 4.4 Kit Kat only supports Qualcomm's Snapdragon CPU and not the old Tegra 3 CPU in the 2012 Nexus 7.

About the only thing you can do to optimize the performance on your Nexus 7 is always close out all the old Applications you were running in background so that your 1GB of ram is available.

Yeah, the N5 is stupid fast.

My N7 used to run circles around my GNex, but now my N5 is the device I pick up first, as I know it's *just* faster than my N7.

Well obviously the N5 will out perform both devices are fast its just that the N5 is faster

The 2012 Nexus 7 is SLOW. I sometimes sit here waiting 30 seconds for something to happen sometimes. I rarely use it anymore because of that.

Putting custom ROMs will probably increase performance depending on which one you might chose because when 5.0 or 4.5 comes out this thing could be like project chunky peanut butter

I used an app which is like ccleaner on a Windows computer called speedup-droid from Google play store it makes the nexus 7 especially if you haven't reset in a year or so much faster, it speeds up phones too

You can use the 3DMark for Android app to get rough speed comparisons. "Ice Storm Unlimited" gives 10681 for my Nexus 7 (2013) vs. 16929 for the Nexus 5. Disclaimer: I work there.
