Nexus 5 is better than the iPhone.

the iPhone 5S is fast. But it also does a lot less. I'll trade the much larger feature set of a high end recent android for a barely perceptible speed difference any day of the year. The 5S camera is also better, but as I always say, if your smartphone purchasing options revolve around needing a camera that has some of the best quality around, I question why you're not using an actual high end camera if you need photo quality that high. Unless it's money issues, then I guess that can't be helped.

The G2 and the Nexus 5 do not have the same panel, so how great the G2's screen is has no bearing on the screen used in the Nexus 5.

I have an iPhone 5s and a Moto X, and I ordered the Nexus 5. I paid $540 outright for my iPhone at the AT&T store via the Next program (Added a line, "financed" the phone, canceled the line immediately). I paid $410 for the 32gb Nexus 5 after the mandatory shipping charges. That's not a lot of decision motivated by price.

I love All Access music. Works on your Mac too unless the Hobbitses don't have it yet, in which case get it... because it's awesome. Google Play Music can allegedly work well with the iTunes library, not sure about that because I really hate iTunes on Windows. It breaks stuff (audio drivers, external drives, random weird stuff that makes no sense, but is somehow solved by uninstalling iTunes) and I won't have it on my new PC's at all.

All that said, if someone is the person who doesn't want to stream because of slow or limited data and/or don't want to pay a subscription for access to the entire library, then All Access probably sucks and iTunes may be exactly what they want. Not sure how, but it's possible, right??

To Chromecast? Just in general you can pin music to devices and play offline, but music that is pinned for some reason doesn't seem to play to Chromecast. So strange.

I have all of my 160GB worth of music and a plethora of playlists in iTunes. I'm not moving them from iTunes ever unless its a guaranteed-to-work perfectly, painless, and quick process. Time is money.

It's $8 for me, which is far less than I used to spend on MP3's, so it's a good value to me. But a lot of people use YouTube or Amazon or Slacker, Pandora, etc. for their music and if you're set up for free now, grabbing a subscription doesn't necessarily make sense. I do like that people have options.

As for the iPhone vs Nexus 5... my serious comment:

This year was the first year I was impressed by an iPhone release. The A7 is a substantial piece of kit. Every Nexus prior to the N5 to me has been the clear leader on the day it released (in their respective Niche). The N5 probably is the best overall phone by my standards... but there are so many other compelling devices, that it's not as clear cut as it has been in recent years.

My Moto X does some really cool things that the Nexus won't (yet) without using Tasker and some third party apps, and the experience isn't the same. TouchWiz has a couple of features (multi window, spen support) that I would love to see come to AOSP.

4.4 is by far ahead of Jelly Bean, but the Nexus won't be alone having that for long at all. LG's G2 is undoubtedly impressive as well. With so many good options, saying there is an objectively better or best device is kinda feeling silly to me. Maybe we should just be happy nerds that we finally have so many awesome choices that have differentiation between them.

Getting most (not all) of the music is pretty easy, but converting playlists doesn't work very well via any apps that I'm aware of yet. As long as it's a hassle it's TOTALLY understandable not to go through a bunch of extra effort to rebuild everything if the current solution is working. It does need to be quick and painless, I agree.

I agree with this. I do think that it comes down to what you are used to somewhat. I used an iPhone 4 before I used my first Android device personally. I thought that an iPhone was easy to navigate. After I had been using Android phones for a while, I put a SIM card back into my iPhone 4. I didn't remember the phone number for that SIM card. I went through the iPhone's Settings menu to find my phone number and couldn't! I had to actually search online to find out how to find my phone number. I have used Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10 and legacy devices and could always find my phone number without too much work. Of course, I can find it easily on an Android device.

This is just one example, but I struggle with simple tasks anytime I pick up an iPhone now.

Along with what was posted, just assuming that what you do is going to be enough and no one can or will do it as good or maybe better.

Palm was great software paired with IMO terrible hardware.
BB problem was it became stale very quick, didnt invest in the all screen era enough.
MS....it just took too long to try to answer the iPhone. IMO they all did. One big example is MS took too long to go to capacitive screens. And they all underestimated the iPhone.

Google just needs to stay hungry, keep the underdog mentality.

The Nexus line was primarily intended to be a developers' phone. Over the course of different Nexus models, some have been released on carriers while others haven't. I still don't consider them to be mainstream consumer devices, but they are not strictly developers' devices either.

My point is that Google isn't executing a plan to take the lead back with Nexus devices. If Google wants to make a splash in the consumer market, they are going to do it via the Motorola line of phones, not the Nexus line of phones. This Nexus 5 launch was an example of that. I had to read blogs to find out that the phone was released. I doubt that we will ever see commercials for it on television like we do with the Moto X.

Nexus products are stock android. OEMs add their own twist to the android os. It would be like if apple allowed OEMs to take the iOS and put it on their own devices, they would put their own features on the iOS, but if you wanted the pure iOS experience you would purchase the iPhone. I disagree that all nexus products have been "groundbreaking" up until now they have been mediocre at best and the whole point to my post was to congratulate Google for taking their nexus line and upping the overall specifications to make the products flag-ship status. Now you can have the stock android experience on a great hardware device without having to root or flash customs Roms. I own the nexus 7 tablet and it blows me away, an incredible device. The original nexus 7 was respectable, but nothing even close in comparison to the 2013 device. Just the display alone is a perfect example to my point. And for the advertising point you brought up, I'm almost in shock after reading your statement on how you wouldn't have known about the nexus 5 without having to search through blogs... From where I stand, it has been global, everyone knew about the nexus 5, it was everywhere, I walked into bestbuy and the stand was up before the phone. In fact all nexus products have been pushed hard by Google. Ive seen the commercial for the nexus 7 thousands of times, on every single commercial break while watching an NFL game, which has probably the largest audience. Almost every site I go on advertises the nexus 5 and nexus 7, I see the links everywhere. I'm not sure why I have seen these things and you haven't but maybe its a regional thing, I don't know.

There hasn't yet been a nexus released they wasn't the leader in its niche on the day it released. They are not all earth shattering, no, but the 5 isn't either. They just set a new bar and show off the potential that can be built upon. In a few months htc , lg and Sammy will try to challenge and rinse repeat.
