Nexus 5 + Prepaid Cost Savings over 24 Months

EIm anxious to see how well voice calling through hangouts works. If it goes well, it might be time to try an att data only plan ($10/GB) and go voip. I have wanted to do this for a long time. With lots of LTE and HSPA coverage it might be time.. :)
Unfortunately, Voice Calling through Hangouts has not (yet) come to Android. I hope it does, and soon.

That's ridiculously expensive. I can get an Unlimited Data Sim only deal for ?12.90pm, or $21. As the Nexus 5 here will be ?280, 280+12.9*24=?590, or $950 over 2 years. And the Xperia Z1 is ?34pm +?49 for unlimited data again, ?865 or $1400 over 2 years... Americans really get steamrollered when it comes to mobile contracts...
While I mostly agree, what's your coverage area? Meaning, since you're using British pounds, I am assuming you're in England. Does this plan you mentioned cover areas outside of England (at no extra charge)? If not, and it's only limited to England, remember that England is a fairly small landmass, compared to the United States. American plans have to cover a much wider area of landmass to claim to be "nation-wide" than England, for example. I'm certain that explains at least some of the cost disparity. If your coverage is Europe-wide (or even EU-wide), that would be an entirely different story, however.

I personally tested T-Mobile using the $30 100 minutes, unlimited messaging, unlimited data plan all over San Diego County, Orange County, LA County, and Riverside County. It wasn't good enough for me to give up Verizon.

I have just turned on a T-Mobile Sim that I have and put it in my Google Edition HTC One, that supports the T-Mobile LTE bands. (I activated the $30 plan which does support LTE) It sounds like we are in the same area, I have checked it in San Diego and SW Riverside County and have to say I am super impressed with what T-Mobile has done lately with their LTE deployment. I haven't used this T-Mobile sim since about 2 months after the Nexus 4 came out, and the difference is very noticeable. I have AT&T on a plan, which has good LTE in SD but not in Riverside County. Verizon definitely has better LTE coverage in the area overall, but it might be worth your time to try T-Mo again if you are interested in the N5.

So the 30$ with 100 min ,unlimited msg , 5gb data is LTE?

currently have that plan on my nexus 4 but thought it was only hspa+?

That plan has access to LTE, but an out of the box nexus 4 does not.

Looks like I need to re-try T-Mobile's LTE coverage. Prior to their LTE launch, it's pretty much no-service at my office. Curious to see if LTE has changed that.

ok - i just switched from Sprint to AT&T GoPhone. AT&T GoPhone LTE is blazing fast and ubiquitous. night and day vs. Sprint. i didn't know what i was missing! also call quality seems much, much clearer, Google Voice Lite for Voicemail is much easier to set up (No Dial** required), ability to do Simultaneous Voice+Data all the time is nice, i haven't tried it yet but i think jumping in/out of 3 way calls is easier with GSM vs. CDMA, and lastly the AT&T GoPhone web interface for account administration and billing is super simple, clean, and easy - yet still has a lot of features like call details etc!

I will say that Inside coverage with T-Mobile is not super, but that is because they use higher band frequencies (ie. 1700 MHz). The higher the frequency the worse it is at penetrating buildings, which is why Verizon is really good for inside coverage (700 MHz), AT&T is OK (850 MHz) and T-Mobile is not great at all (1700MHz). This is probably why carriers have multiple bands they use for different things like voice on one, data on the other. I am not an expert by any means, but lost a weekend about a year ago figuring all of this stuff out when I went on a crazy link chasing tangent (We have all been on that ride!).

Just a quick question about prepaid service comparisons, having read the entire thread, nothing was mentioned about Straight Talk, or maybe I missed it. My wife and myself are looking to switch from Verizon to ST, is their AT&T sim the same as the AT&T Go Phone sim? This will be my first foray into the prepaid world, and I just wanna make sure we make the right decision for the long term savings. How reliable is the service between either? Thx in advance for the help!

What I read on Howard Forum and other forums, ST has the same coverage as GoPhone, but their customer services sucks. With GoPhone you could walk into any Corp AT&t store for any issues. ST is cheaper but does not offer the same customer service as GoPhone. Its really up to you. I had At&t Gophone and the coverage for my work and home was horrible. I am now on Tmobile and coverage is much better and its also cheaper and I get unlimited data (first 5 GB LTE)

Sweet thx! Guess since there's no contact, if I don't like the one, will try out the other.

FYI - AT&T GoPhone now offers a $5 Monthly Credit for Customers who enroll in Auto Refill via Credit Card and are on $45 and higher plans.

Just want to put a word in for Consumer Cellular which is on the AT&T Network.
I have a Nexus 5 & I used to have GoPhone with AT&T.

Even though Consumer Cellular is a no-contract post-paid provider, it really works for me like a prepaid.
As I go over the limit of my plan I bump up to the next plan for the period,
and I change my plan downward every billing period just before close to get the lowest cost.

So I average $20 most months of 200 calls or less with 200 txt message and just 10 Mb of data.
When I am out of wi-fi range and/or travelling a lot and using the data plan it bumps up to the point where I'll pay closer to $40.

So there's lot's of head room for changing without penalty.
It is even BETTER than AT&T because when I'm in a roaming partner area it works whereas GoPhone does not work with AT&T roaming
partners. Pretty STUPID! My Nexus 5 reports LTE, or HSPA when I'm in an AT&T area.

Their voice plan ranges from $10 (no minutes) to $60 (6000) and data ranges from $2.50 (20 Mb) to $30 (2.5Gb). Very flexible.
The only downside is that you have to put a credit card on file and monitor your usage to know what range you are using.
But they are very good a NAGGING you to bump up when you're projected to go over. Just remember to bump down afterwards.

cheers
