I've had this issue for quite some time. But, it all started after I updated to 5.1.1. This issue exists with WhatsApp on my phone. My phone doesn't sync whatsapp messages on standby. I will have to close the application and open it again. Only then can I see my messages. I initially thought it must be due to a huge amount of data my account had. Quite illogical for that to be a reason. But, however, these are the following fixes I tried.
1. Cleared Cache and force stopped and started the app
2. Restarted the phone many times
3. Cleared all media and retained only messages
4. Un-installed and re-installed
Issue persists. Both on data network and WiFi
