Nexus 5 Wireless Charger - Unboxing Pictures

I agree.. Also from Phil's video I can't tell for certain if he has the charger actually plugged in or not... he swings the phone from the cord on the charger to show the magnet but you can't see if it's actually plugged to a power source... if there is no power to my Qi Chargers the screen does NOT light up when I set it down on them..

I am playing around with my settings and if I find something that might be of use I'll let you know...

my charger is plugged in and i get NOTHING - NO CONFIRMATION. this was on both (i bought two). Phil's would be the same. fortunately - this COULD be fixed with a quick Kit Kat SOFTWARE update. it's not a hardware flaw or problem of the charger itself - it's a feature omission that could be fixed with a quick software patch to the phone OS.

what Google SHOULD have designed to happen when you place the device on the charger to confirm that it has begun charging and you hit the sweet spot -

1. display should turn on for a few quick seconds (if not on already).
2. brief pop up notification saying "Wireless Charging".
3. brief sound notification (default sound and also user defined - with none as an option).
4. display goes off and phone sleeps/charges/locks.

all of this should happen within just a few seconds.

do you agree????????

if you notice - some of the skinned Android devices include this. see VZW LG G2 -

"Wireless Charging Detected" pop up.

Gekko - can you clarify? Does this happen (that is, nothing) even if your phone is below 90% when you place it on the charger?

interesting theory but unfortunately i can no longer test as these puppies are packed up and on their way back to Google for a refund!

I just don't understand what could be in this Nexus 5/7 (2013) charger that wasn't in the Nexus 4 charger? With my TYLT VU and the Nexus 4 charger every time my phone touches the charger (as well as my Nexus 7) the screen automatically powers up and it starts charging... Maybe the VU and Nexus 4 chargers also have some kind of NFC chip in them and the new Nexus 5 charger does not? Because when I plug my phone up via USB it does not make the sound it does when I place it on the Qi charger...... I don't see anything in the "Tech Specs" of the VU or the Nexus 4 charger that list NFC chip inside....

There has to be something slightly different in the Qi charging system than when plugged up via USB because of the audible tone I get when wireless charging and USB charging... Both Wireless and USB charging the screen turns on (at least with my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7)

Very strange I have no clue... But your right a KitKat update to the phone could give you some kind of prompt and information that it is charging.. I know with the Clock Plus you have some extra options that can be displayed in daydream mode while charging but nothing that tells you your device is actually CHARGING... My Nexus 7 doubles as my alarm clock and I set it on the Qi charger and after 5 minutes it goes into "Daydream" mode but along with the clock displays the battery % and email messages as well....

it's a shame that i had to send these back as i really love the design and the convenience but it will drive me crazy to be constantly guessing if i hit the sweet spot and if my phone is charging or not. that being said - there is something very satisfying about plugging in a physical wire and you KNOW your phone is charging.

what's weird is that when you do plug in the regular microUSB charger cord into the phone - the phone DOES power on for a few seconds to confirm that you are indeed charging. not so with this Nexus 5 + Nexus 5 Wireless Charger. you're left guessing - and i hate guessing.

Your sending them back? That sucks dude.. but your right if your left GUESSING what is the point? It's a mild annoyance when the screen powers back up but I guess it is at least an acknowledgement that the thing is charging up... It lights up the screen with the LG one for the Nexus 4 from last year and it lights up with the VU .... Just really seems like it's something in the phone not the charger...... Like something isn't set/adjusted on the actual phone.........

Not sure.. but gekko says the magnet won't hold vertically with a case on the phone.

it will hold vertically but i wouldn't trust it for long - especially with the bumps and starts/stops that occur while driving a car. and especially if you have a case.

Hi gekko, someone elsewhere said if the battery is 100% nothing happens but if the battery is less than 100% the screen comes on and the little battery icon has the lightning bolt on it. I don't know if that really helps though without seeing an example.

but may go for 3 Nokia DT-900s for the same price.

That's what I did, I got impatient and ordered the DT-900s a few days before Google released theirs. I am pretty pleased with the Nokia. Phone always hits the sweet spot and it has a led light to let you know it's charging. No magnets though.

I can confirm with 100% certainty that the phone does light up and make a noise (when not on silent or vibrate) when you place it on the charger and it begins charging. It lights up with no noise if on vibrate or silent. It is really easy to hit the sweet spot. The magnet kind of sucks it in to where it should be. The bottom is very grippy too. I also held it vertical and shook it around and without a case it gets a really good magnetic attachment without a case. I think this might work if mounted vertically. I will try later with the Nexus Bumper case. Sorry for the crappy photos. First one, screen was locked and it turned on when placed on the charger. Second one, is me attempting to hold it vertically.

Sorry the 2nd pic is rotated but you get the idea.

So it Holds vertically with the bumper but wouldn't stay in place if you move it around a bit (as in a car). Attachment is much, much weaker.

interesting. the only variable i can think of is -

battery level higher than X% (95%? 99%?)

in one of the videos above the guy's battery is at 92% - and the notification happens. so the previous theory of 90% does not seem to be true. i still don't like this because often times i throw my phone on the charger at night and my battery may be full or almost full - that doesn't mean that i don't want it charging so that it's fresh in the morning. i ALWAYS want a notification of sweet spot - even if my battery is at 100%!
