Nexus 6 black screen of death, can anyone help?

Nexus 6 black screen of death

While using my (unrooted, pretty much stock) nexus 6 from t mobile, the screen stutters, goes black, and the only thing ive found that can fix it is a factory reset. When i reboot it, i get a black screen, no soft buttons or notification bar, but when i hold the power button, the power down appears like normal. Safe mode gives the safe mode text in the corner, and shows the lack of sim card notification at the top, and thats it. Does anybody know what could be causing this?
