What made you prefer the nexus over the note 5? I have the option for either and don't know which to go with.

what is your background in terms of previous devices? Did you have Samsung devices before?

I haven't tried the note 5 but the hardware seems top of the line - doesn't feel too big, looks great, best screen on a smartphone, one of the best cameras. Don't know what they say about battery life but should be good. All in all it seems like one of the best devices available, and a lot will tell you it's a better device than the N6.

I, myself, cannot stand touchwiz and hardware buttons, so I will most likely always choose a nexus device, especially if they keep a 5.7+ inch one.

Edit: I also think front facing speakers are great, it's a feature I would like to have on my next device - and that every device should have.

I prefer the latest updates. The last Samsung phone I owned was the Note 2, which I loved. The issue with Samsung for me is Touchwiz. They make great hardware, but I prefer the software experience that the Nexus provides.

I wonder if illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup

I think the Note 5 would be a good a bit better than a Nexus 6, however it might not be such a straight forward decision if you compare the Note 5 against the Nexus 6p which is a fairer comparison as they are both 2015 flagships.

So I'm actually coming from ios so I don't know too much about android and touch wiz vs stock to begin with. All of the videos I've seen comparing these two it seemed like the note won in most of the categories.

I' lucky to have the Nexus 6, the 6P and the Note 5 (just sold my iPhone 6S Plus to get the Note 5 and much prefer it)

The N6 is probably one of my fave phones ever, I've slab-like hands, so it suits me down to a tee :D

The 6P is a stunning phone, but so is the Note 5 and with running Nova Launcher on them all, I'd be hard pressed to say which I'd keep and which I'd sell on!

As it stands, here in the UK, the Note 5 can be bought for around £430 and that's from resellers in the UK, so no customs chargers (we didn't get the Note 5 in case you didn't realise and it was frowned upon)!

I've only had the 6P since December and still getting used to it, but for me, it's overall 'newness' isn;t that much of an upgrade over the N6 and IMO, I'd happily sell the 6P and stick with my N6, but keep the Note 5 for it's true usage and that's the S Pen; which I use for business and when I pop out to meet clients & candidates etc...

Are you in a position to buy both, if so, do it and try that way

If not, then it's a hard decision and if I had to choose between them, I'd really struggle, but I'd probably go for the 6P as it's Vanilla Android, but I know I'd still hanker after the Note 5!!!

Sorry; I'd typed that under a new username which I've created in error, must have logged in via FB by accident! :-\

So here's the situation. I bought a n6 for a good price in the box still. I still have my iPhone and listed it for trade or sale on Craigslist and was offered a note 5 for it if I threw in $75. I was going to do that and sell the note 5 or the nexus 6 depending which I liked more. Or should I just stick with the n6 and sell my iPhone for pure cash?

I personally would go with the first option (as long as the Note is working fully and not damaged at all in any way)!

It'd be good to have them both, side by side, so you can see which will suit your needs best etc and obviously, which you like best!

The Note 5 is nicer in the hand than the N6, it just feels more plush/top of the range, but the UI, for me, on the Note 5 is excellent, but it's still not Vanilla Android!

Interesting. See for me I guess that stock and pure android vs touch wiz isn't a big thing coming from the ios world. But I'll use the nexus for a few days, then the note 5 for a few days maybe, then decide. Another option is trading the note 5 for a 6p..or v10 or edge plus idk its a tough decision lol

I prefer the Nexus 6 over the Note 5 for the timely updates, on screen buttons, Project Fi and developer support.

Well I for one would like to hear what you end up deciding as I am considering the Note 4 or 5 vs 6p. There so many opinions that are for and against either of these and this just made me more confused! LOL!! I'm currently sorting a BlackBerry Passport OG which I really, really enjoy!!! But, it seems that this platform is not going to grow anymore. So, I want to get familiar with Android OS, as this is where I think, most likely, heading towards. I personally don't like iOS!!

Keep us posted on which device you'll end up with!!

Cheers!

It's not that I didn't like iOs, it's just that after years of it I didn't get the same excitement of using it. I'm into tech and iOS just isn't providing as much in that department as android. I'll let you know what I go with. I am liking my Nexus 6 a lot. But if I end up with that Note 5 the battery life and camera might win out.

Full understand re the boredom with iOS, I'm the same!

Everything I have is Apple based (2012 Mac Mini specced to the eyeballs, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro and x3 ATV's), but their phones just bore me and I thought having the 6S Plus would fit in well; but when it comes to phones, I like to tinker and Android is just so much better suited to me...

I'd say you're doing the right thing giving both the N6 and Note 5 a bash; be interesting to see what your thoughts are after a week or so of having them both side by side

Given that you don't have experience with android, I think it's best to get a nexus. I find it quite unpleasant that OEMs such as Samsung duplicate everything that Google offers. No, I don't want to create a Samsung account to sync my contacts.. If you had full choice then the nexus 6p would then be your best bet.

Umm.. Yeah no. The Samsung account isn't to sync your contacts. You can sync your contacts if you want and you do not have to have a Samsung account if you don't want to.

Inexperience with Android doesn't mean a Samsung phone isn't a good option. My experience with Android has all been Samsung.

I had to use a galaxy s3 for a few months. Somehow, even though I had the Facebook app installed, Samsung was always bugging me too log in to Facebook through the web for some reason (that I never understood).

It's not just about syncing contacts, it's about a lot of small annoyances.

I'm not saying Samsung devices are bad (I even said the note 5 is probably a better device than the nexus 6). But I do think it's a bit of a shame to start your android experience with touchwiz.

The S3 is light years from the Note 5 and S6. Myself, pure Android is top boring for me and I like the simple apps like messaging, file Explorer and the gallery that come with Samsung.

I had the ñ6 I'm trying the note 5 now. I have the option to trade it for a v10. Thoughts?

Sorry, I don't know much about the V10, except that I'm not really excited by the gimmicky dual screen. The camera received a lot of praise, but the note 5 one is great too.

There's a lengthy comparison video on android authority that may help you: Samsung Galaxy Note 5 vs LG V10 - Android Authority

Also I don't know which manufacturer between LG and Samsung has a better track record at updating their OSes, but for me it would matter.

I bought a Samsung tablet, the note pro 8.4, which was supposed to be the top of the line when it came out, but it never got a single update and is stuck on android 4 while android 6 is on all nexus devices.

In general, both of those manufacturers release a large number of devices each year, and many of them never see the light of an update.
