Nexus 6P - Slow charging

With my N6 I had a car charger with 2 USB ports. It never did turbo charging speeds but on my 30 min drive home I got about 20% charge which was fairly good. When I got the 6p I bought some type a to type c cables (approved ones from the list the Google engineers made) and put one in that same charging port. Now I only get 5-7% on the same drive. Is it because the cable is limiting it? The phone because it's not type c to type c?
I know that 6p battery is bigger so it won't be the same percentage increase on charging but shouldn't drop off that much.

Thanks

Re: Slow charging

what are the specs on your charger?

I honestly don't know. I was on a road trip and my old one crapped out so I stopped at the next wally world and just picked one up and figured I would get a good one next time I was at Best Buy but this thing charged pretty good so I kept it. I gave my n6 to my daughter so when she gets out of school I will see what it charges at compared to the 6p using ampere. I had the 6p plugged in (one of the charge ports in my car is supplied power even when car is off) for 2 hours while at my parents the other day and it only went from 32% up to 50% when the N6 would have been fully charged.

Re: Slow charging

The above cable and charger will give you quick charging speeds with your 6p.

I already ordered another cable and charger for the car. Just wanting to know why such a drop off in charging ability? I wasn't expecting the 20% in 30 min but 18% in 2 hours is ridiculous. probably would have charged faster hooked up to my computer.

Re: Slow charging

Because it's a different phone? and you aren't using a good charger? The phone charges fast if you are using the right equipment. The problem is the charger and/or cable.

Well its not the best it's a decent charger as it charged the n6 quickly so it had the capability of pushing through the amount of power needed. And the cable is an approved one from the list Google engineers put out so it must be the phone limiting the amount of electricity it's letting in.

Re: Slow charging

I know it's too low for the fast charging that's not what I was expecting. But expected it to charge more then 18% in 2 hours. If I was using an old .8 amp like the of Droid came with that would be understandable. But how does 2.1 amp change n6 is less then 2 hours but barley does anything to 6p. The only thing I can come up with is the phone itself is limiting it because it's not a type c to type c cable and that is what this whole thread was started for is to see if that theory was correct.

There are a number of factors. Qualcomm SOC supports Quick Charge 2.0, but not in the case of the 6p as it uses a proprietary USB-C transfer standard. For the 6p to charge quickly, only a charger with 5V/3A output and USBC to USBC cable will trigger a quick charge. Any other charger will give you different results, but ultimately the charging current or rate of charge will be determined by the charger specs as well as the phone itself. I've also heard that different USBC cables provide different results but can't speak to that as to why....

Re: Slow charging

Just to add my experience, I have exactly the same car charging adaptor, only received this morning, so no full charge tests carried out yet.

However, using the USBC-USBC cable supplied by Huawei with my 6P, it still only kicks out around 2.5 Amps at approx 4.2Volts.

I admit, this was without the car engine running, but my socket is rated at 12 Volts/10 Amps, so see no reason why it shouldn't give the full 3.0 Amps.

To be fair, 2.5 Amps will be plenty to keep it topped up, even if using GPS, but thought you may be interested in the results with a USBC cable.

Amazon.com: SONEic - USB Type-C Charger+Cable. 15 Watt/3.0 Amp. USB Type-C to Type-C Cable. Rapid Wall Charger for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel C, OnePlus 2, Lumia 950/XL and All USB Type-C Powered Devices - Black: Cell Phones & Accessories

Picked up 2x of these, so now I have 3 chargers. Reviews say its the same exact charger that come with the 6p, and I get the rapid charging message when I plug in. A little more pricey, but piece of mind knowing my chargers will have no issues.

Re: Slow charging

All my chargers are 2.4a since able last year and it charges slower then QC chargers but still plenty fast enough for me. But I still have 1A chargers for other devices and I can actually see the battery go down when in using it and charging with that charger.

Re: Slow charging

Just throwing this out there but I have very good luck with this charger.
Amazon.com: USB Type C Car charger, Nekteck 5.4A USB-C Car Charger Adapter with Integrated Built-in Type-C 3.1 Cord For Apple MacBook 12 inch, Nokia N1, Nexus 5X 6P, Lumia 950/950XL, OnePlus 2 and More, Black: Cell Phones & Accessories

Originally I was hesitant on buying one of these, but since it is made by the same company that made one of the first Benson Leung approved USB A to C cables I figured it was worth a shot. So far I have been very happy with this charger. It charges very fast and the attached cord is plenty long enough.

Re: Slow charging

I got this, it charges the 6P so fast. The USB-C is hard wired to the charger so no worry about a separate cable. And there's a secondary USB-A port for guests.
