Nexus 7: Any good?

I come from a history of tablets. I had a Xoom, and my wife has had a couple of iPads. A year ago, I upgraded my Xoom to a Nexus 10 tablet, and love it. But, I always had that nag to own a Nexus 7 also, although I knew that I probably wouldn't use it much. Eventually, desire won over practicality, plus a great sale price won out, and I purchased a Nexus 7. Now I use it 70% of the time, over the Nexus 10, mainly for the convenience of grabbing it for something quick, or sticking it in my pocket and running. I love my Nexus 10, but am madly in love with my Nexus 7. It is absolutely fantastic! Don't pay attention to the negatives on here. They are probably Apple fanboys. My Nexus tablets, especially the N7, runs circles around my wife's iPad. (Don't tell her I said that.)

Apple fan boys. Lol

I remain of the opinion that the N7 is still the best buy you can get right now. The Note tablets and Xperia Tablet Z are ok but cost too much for what you get, and I prefer the N7 to the Gpad (both regular and GE versions) even when the Gpad is on sale. I doubt very much anyone is going to surprise me with a $250 tablet I'm going to like better between now and the 2014 N7. If they do, I'll still hold off until the next Nexus tablet hits the shelves regardless before I decide.

32g/GSM N7 here. Its been stellar since i got it for christmas in 2012. Its perfect for playing Real Racing 3.

If i can sneak into the tailend of this thread, what should i do keep a 2012 nexus 7 8gb that i have for $128 or return it and get a 2013 nexus 7 16 gb for $90 more? thanks.

I think many of the above are paid shills. The Nexus 7 is crap. I strongly suggest that anyone who has been suckered dispose of their systems properly. I am willing to assist in the disposal of Nexus 7 tablets, feel free to send them to me for proper disposal (I do an exceptional job with the LTE version in particular). I will not charge for this service, and may even be willing to help you out with postage.

I have actually been very happy with my Nexus 7 WiFi version...

Your not the only one that came from a playbook. The swipes were so intuitive. Good call with the case to unlock the device

I've had my 2013 Nexus 7 for about two weeks now. I come from using a 1st gen iPad Mini and a brief flirt with a Samsung Note 8. Of those two the Nexus 7 is my favorite. If I were huge into Apple it would be the Mini no contest but I've come to appreciate Android a lot more and am looking to getting a lot more out of it's flexibility in the future.

The 7 does a lot of things right. It feels great in the hand, meaning easy to grip one handed and use for an extended amount of time with the back being just grippy enough. The screen is phenomenal, at least compared to the original Mini and the Note 8. No noticeable pixels at all and this is huge for me since I read a lot on my tablet when I deploy. Screen size does feel a little cramped at times since this is the smallest width screen I've used on a tablet but I only really notice it when browsing websites that leave a huge amount of white space and squeeze their actual content into a tiny little column in the center of the screen. I always have to double tap to zoom. Also I tried out reading comics last night and at least on the issue of Transmetropolitan I had up, it was just barely big enough to read without zooming in portrait mode.

Internals are up to par for what I've been using it for meaning to noticeable UI lag when zipping around home screens, pulling down the notification shade, or transitioning to the app drawer. The only place I've noticed anything is in the app switcher (multi-tasker?). I sometimes get a one or two second pause when moving into another app. The cameras work... I don't care about my tablet cameras as long as they actually function. I'm not taking photos with them that are destined for a wall or anything, I just need them to function well enough that I can use them for video calls. Battery life has been decent though I haven't exactly done any scientific studies, I just know it will last the whole day for what I use it for. I will say that it feels like it lasts longer then the Note 8's. I know that if I used the Note for any significant period of time during the day that I would wake up to it dead if I didn't plug it in before going to bed. This is one place the Mini does beat both Android tablets, the battery felt like it lasted forever and if I left it alone for a week I could still come back to a functioning tablet, just down a couple percents. I have zero confidence that my Nexus or the Note 8 would survive on standby for a week not on the charger. But again, this is just daily usage and not running bechmarks or timers or anything.

I use zero accessories, cases, protectors, and what not. Though I do have a qi charger and slip case on the way. I don't feel like I need to baby it, the back feels resilient as does the front panel. I am still getting used to having to use the power button on the side whenever I want to wake it up. On both the Mini and Note I would use the home button. Even now I can see something like LG's "Knock On" feature being really useful. Overall I love the thing and fortunately, knock on wood, I have yet to run into any of the quality control issues that a lot of people seem to.

I've had my Nexus 7 (2012) for almost a year. Still in love with it. My wife has an iPad mini and this every bit as good and more. And I have an iPhone that I love but for a tablet this is far and above anything I've had.

You can dramatically speed up the app switcher--both invoking the menu and switching to the selected app--if you change to the ART run-time in developer options. But there may be some apps that don't work correctly with it, although none that I've experienced.

Just be cautious... There are a lot of faulty n7s out there. Read the previous threads about the problems that you may encounter.

If you do run into any of the problems, such as constant reboots.... Return it for a new one. Bc it seems like ASUS has a bad quality control program with their products.

I am outside my in store return policy. So my only option left is sending the N7 device back to the manufacturer for "repair". Still debating whether I should or shouldn't...

Either way, the N7 is a great device for the $$$, Grant it if its working properly.

Why on earth would you buy a '12 N7 for $128? I would say return it (if you can) and buy one from someone (like me) that upgraded to the '13 N7 and has the old N7 just laying around. It's too cool to give away, and nobody will pay more than $50 for it. I would sell it for under $100.

I had QC problems with both Asus N7s ('12 and '13). I was in the market for a laptop and while ASUS had some great options, I went with Samsung due to my experiences with the N7.

I've only had my Nexus 7 for two days but so far I love this tablet. I'm coming from am iPad Mini W/Retina display and I don't look back. I wish I would have gotten the LTE version but that's my own mistake...I cheaped out. I've had no problems with it so far! Oh and the display is amazing!

I recently got the N7 2013 and it has worked flawlessly so far. I also have an Ipad Air and I have to say I think the N7 is just as smooth and fast as the Ipad Air, and I think they will compliment each other nicely. The Air is great, but I wanted a smaller tablet as well and I just could not see myself spending $400 for the Retina Ipad Mini. Plus, I really wanted a Nexus tablet since I want day-1 OS updates and I have always wanted a stock android device again after previously having the Samsung Galaxy Nexus .

My only complaint with the N7 so far is the color accuracty of the screen. The N7 is a nice screen, very clear and sharp, but when I do side by side comparisons with the N7, the Ipad Air, and my wife's Kindle Fire 7" HDX, the N7 is the definitely in last place between the three. When side by side with those other tablets you really see how the N7 colors look kind of slightly faded to be honest. The HDX 7 and Air have equally amazing looking screens (at least my wife and I think that) and the colors really "pop". However, when not doing side by side comparisons with those two tablets, the N7 looks just fine.
