Nexus 7 LTE battery life.

Your battery life doesn't seem that bad considering you have the LTE version.

About the battery life on the iPad, Apple produces their on hardware so their software optimization is much better then on Android, which results in better battery life.

Also Taylor from Pocketnow noted that idle time on most of his android tablets sucked, but the iPad has always been consistend.

It really depends on the user, some people get great idle drain and some don't. If you really value good battery life you just should stick with the iPad. But if you want the best bang for your buck and you can deal with the battery life issue's (sometimes) just stick with the n7

Thanks, yes good point about Apple. I really like my Nexus, the size, the zippyness etc. As long as I know that there is nothing wrong with my device I will just have to train myself to charge it sooner than I usually do.

I have two iDevices already and the N7 is a breath of fresh air.

BTW, does any if you turn your N7 off at night or from time to time? Is this recommended?

Well, a factory reset won't hurt either to find out if there is something draining your battery, or maybe try safe mode and let it sit for a while. Also wiping the cache partition could help.

And since your using a mobile connection, signal strength has to do with the drain too. A bad signal equals more drain per hour.

And if you really think the battery life sucks and you still have warranty, just send it back to Asus and ask for a battery replacement, see if that makes any difference

About turning off at night, the only thing I do with all my devices at night is just, set them in airplane mode, that saves some battery too.

You can however reboot it once a week or something, i.m.o if my drain is not weird I live by : If it ain't broke, don't fix it, haha.

Anyways I understand were you're coming from. I'm a battery freak myself haha, and their are just too many factors too really tell if you have good battery life, it ultimatley is your decision if you're happy with it or not

Thanks everyone, my battery went from 97 to 82% overnight, that's around 8 hours. You are right I need to decide if I can live with this.

I will try putting it in airplane mode at night and see if that helps.

Short story...
I had an HTC thunderbolt, the phone with the worst battery performance of any modern smartphone ever released. After I upgraded I put the phone in airplane mode and let my kids use it on WiFi for games/YouTube. With the radio off is was getting 3 days out of a battery that used to need a charger every 4 hours.

Moral: you might just need to put the nexus into airplane mode when not in use. If you don't need to receive notifications on it maybe a battery optimizing app could be used to turn off the mobile radio whenever the screen is off. I have never used one of those apps but I bet if it works and you don't need to receive notifications like texts and instant email alerts you will probably see a significant gain in battery life.

Based on the battery drop you reported with the phone idling a am pretty sure its your mobile radio eating up battery.

Thanks very much, that makes a lot of sense to turn on Airplane mode and use it on WiFi when I have WiFi available (not just at night).

I turned it off about an hour and half back and the percentage has only dropped 2% during that time. :)

It does bother me a little that I have turn cellular off but that's a very minor irritation for a battery life crazy like me.

As long as I am in an WiFi area, I don't really lose any functionality anyway.

As an aside, I had the HTC Vivid and that definitely had the worst battery life of any other phone I had.

The amount of battery used while idle but with LTE on depends very heavily on the quality of the connection: when the connection is weak, battery use goes up, sometimes dramatically.

True, although I live in a excellent coverage area and all my phones have "told" me so.

I do typically turn my phone off at night when I am home, so don't really what happens then. Its quite possible that there has been some tower work going on after hours and that's messing up my N7.

I have it in the Airplane Mode now so I will see what happens overnight. If it still drops as much, I guess I would need to seriously decide what's more important to me, the battery life or everything else that I like about it.

Thanks much :)

Looks like in Airplane mode with WiFi on sure helped.

I took the N7 off the charger at 4:00 PM and now after 5 hrs and 45 mins, I have lost 10%.

The screen on time is 1 hr and 26 mins. So it has been a mix of usage and idle time.

I am very happy with the results overnight:

Bedtime - 11:40 PM - 76%
Screen on - 41%
Tablet Idle - 4%

Morning - 8:00 AM - 73%
Screen on - 39%
Tablet idle - 9%

Total time off the charger - 15 hours and 50 mins
Screen on - 3 hrs and 18 mins.

Thank you very much everyone for all your help, all the suggestions were very helpful. :)

Looks like this thread is working out for you even though you expect a device that costs half as much to perform as well as your iPad... LOL

I'm thinking you might want to try juice defender or some battery management app to turn off the mobile radio automatically when not in use. Problem solved.

What can I say I have high expectations of all my devices lol.

Thanks, I have been managing turning cellular off manually so far, if it becomes problematic I will certainly look into an app.

Here is the full battery cycle with cellular turned off. It wasn't sitting idle as you can see from the graph.

This is very encouraging.

Thanks all

Over 10 hours of screen on time is fantastic.

It is, isn't it? I didn't expect this big a jump just turning cellular off.

Still not as good as my iPad Air. :D :D :D :p :p :p

(Sorry couldn't resist ;))

Really enjoying my Nexus and having a hard time putting it down.

Here's my battery life update - this was almost solely eBook reading, with the screen at minimum brightness.
I'll post another update that involves heavy CPU/graphics load.

This charge cycle was probably typical of how I would be using my N7.

Quite a bit of reading, some web browsing and Google Search, some email, Messenger, Hangouts, a little bit of game.

WiFi on when available with Airplane mode activated and a short spell of LTE otherwise.

I got great battery life imo. I am very happy about this and can now enjoy my tablet without worrying about the battery dying on me prematurely.
