Nexus 7 or 10 for mapping?

I do a lot of bicycle touring. I have been using a Garmin GPS for routing and mapping during the tour. It works fairly well as long as you follow the suggested route.

It does have a feature that will route you for the roads it thinks are best for the bicycle. But the problem is sometimes it wants to take you way out of your way just to avoid a small section of road, it deems dangerous when really the road might not be all that bad.

The problem is that the screen is just too small to route plan and find alternate routes.

So I am thinking of buying a tablet PC to augment the GPS. Most likely a Nexus 7 or 10. It would be my first tablet.

The question is which size? A seven inch display will be really nice or traveling as it should be able to fit in my handlebar bag for easy access. While a seven inch display will be significantly larger than my GPS screen, I am still worried that it will be too small for mapping.

Any recommendations on what size screen I should go with?

P.S. I will also be using the tablet around the house to browse the net while watching TV, playing videos and maybe some games etc.

I would think the 10" would be unwieldy, personally, but I don't know exactly how you'd be setting it up. It's really more of a preference thing, probably.

Are you planning to get a 3G model, or Wifi only? Unfortunately, the Google Navigation tends to get a bit confused without a data connection. It will hopefully be improved in the future (they only just recently made it possible to have offline maps), but for right now, using either one as a navigation device is going to require either a different app that has full maps stored on the device, or a 3G model.

I would want wifi since I wouldn't need to be online to get the maps. just download them.

I really can't see spending the extra cash to get online. It would be nice but just too expensive IMHO. I really don't have time to get online anyway when I am on the road. About the only time it would come in handy would be looking for a place to stay for the night. Depending on the tour, I will either have my place to stay set beforehand or I'll look once I hit town. So if I am in town. I could always find
a hotspot. If I am touring in a remote area for sure I would have done my homework before leaving on finding a place for that night.

I would need to measure it but I am thinking the 10 would fit in my map case, a plastic ziplock type bag that sits on top of my handlebar bag. You can sort of see the map case in the picture. below.

But I think you might be right, the 10 might be a bit large.

The price might make the difference for me. Everything I am seeing for the 10 is almost twice the price of the 7. Or is this because those are G3?
