Nexus 7 or... Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 ?

I'm definitely going Nexus now. I like the Google experience, as phone-ish as it may be. Nothing against the Gtab of coarse. :p

One thing to consider between the two of these devices is that the Galaxy Tab 2 7" can be bought for $250 even, no tax or shipping cost from Amazon.

The Nexus 7 cost me $228* for the 8Gb model and it would have cost me almost $282* for the 16Gb.

I'm still happy that I returned the Tab 2 and have a Nexus 7 on the way, but I figured I would throw out those extra costs since they do make a significant difference in the price.

* These numbers are dependent on your state sales tax.

I got my nexus 7 for $260 but didn't pay a thing because I traded stuff in at gamestop for it. Plus the $25 google play card sweetened the deal even more

Not to mention the nexus will get the updates first. No carrier BS like we had with the verizon nexus. That is another reason I got it. I can always have the latest update on my tablet to hold me over the extra few months it takes for my phones to get it. Hopefully the sgs3 will get quicker updates, but not holding my breath.

Sadly USB-OTG will not support native storage initially. Other devices like keyboards and usb-2-ethernet will be. We will have to wait for dev communitiy or google to come out with an update for that.

If this thing sells well without it, don't count on google, count on devs to come up with it.

Hm, so I wouldn't be able to use flash drives+USB-microUSB connectors to get around the storage limitation? That's what I was hoping to do. (tablet newb)

Nope. Better to go 16GB. You will be waiting (hopefully not very long) until storage devices and flash drives are supported. The same with HD video out. There will be a solution for that, probably a wireless one, IMO but not immediately.

Ah, thanks for the tip. The other alternative I had been thinking about was spending that $50 on a 16gb Kingston Wi-Drive rather than the extra 8gb of space on the Nexus 7 itself. It's fairly small and light, and the wirelessness/portability of it would make it a seemingly attractive choice for storing media for travel. But I haven't been able to confirm yet that you can actually transfer files from it to a tablet, as opposed to streaming them off the drive, which seems to be what it advertises as its primary function but which seems stupid, since watching one film would drain its battery... (if this is not the appropriate thread for this discussion, apologies and I can relocate)

No rear camera is a little disappointing but I can live with that. If the Nexus 7 had a microSD slot, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but 8GB is just not enough and $250 isn't an impulse buy.

8GB internal with microSD - so I could use the 32GB card I already have - for $199 would have been great.

I have a Tab 2 and a rooted Nook Tablet.

I've decided to return the Tab 2 to Costco and get the Nexus 16GB.

Once I was able to determine that you can in fact drag and drop between the Nexus and a PC, I made the decision to make the change.

I was scared by all the stories that the only way to move data was through Google's, SLOWWWWWW and clunky cloud.

I can deal with hard-wire transfers as an off-set to the killer hardware in the Nexus. Hopefully one day, external device support will become available without needing to root.

The Tab is really nice, but hey - Its no Cadillac.

I ordered the Nexus 7" 16GB because of the NFC feature. :p

Of course I wish to have a back camera, an HDMI port, and memory slot. I am certain that next year Nexus 7" will be more complete. I took the 16GB as I think it will be easier to sale. Also my current 16GB tablet is always full.:)

I currently have a RIM Play Book 7" 16GB that I like a lot. I got it for free from attending a conference, but it can be find for $199 at Best Buy. I can port some Android apps using Adobe Flex. There is an HDMI port and a dual camera that I use a lot. I used it mostly when commuting or traveling to access .pdf, docx, xlsx, .mp4, and WiFi Internet. Sad that it might disapear:'(

The Nexus 7 seems too centric, like how Apple is with their iDevices. That turned me off along with the fact that there is no SD card slot of any kind, micro or otherwise, to expand it's use and value.

"Too centric" ...what are you talking about?

Here's an idea for storage... DropBox! Sure it's cloud based but you can get up to 50 gb if you pay for it. Also, I just got an HTC phone and opened a dropbox account on there, and by going through their "getting started" wizard, I was able to upgrade to 23 GB of storage for free. Granted, thats just a promotion for HTC phones on certain cell carriers, but it's at least worth looking into to see if you are elidgeable. I know I'll be linking my N7 to my dropbox account for sure!

That aside, you could also use network attached storage if I'm not mistaken. After all, most people are going to have their N7 attached to their wifi network anyway. Personally, I have a 1tb usb drive. Sure, I would be elated to hook that up directly to my N7, but I'm ok hooking it up to my PC and sharing over the network instead. ;) And who knows, maybe I'll just replace that setup altogether with a single network enabled hard drive.

Of course, though, like other people are saying, the dev community will probably break this problem wide open. I'm sure someone somewhere is going to make some sort of hack that allows you to hook up a USB SD Card reader. But we won't see anything like that at least until the N7 ships. Remember people... first comes the hardware, and THEN comes the software.

You make a very good point. Storage shouldn't be an issue at all.

That's too expensive per year, & don't they put a limit on upload size?

It's cheaper, I think, to get something like the Kingston wi-drive.

Where did you try the Tab? If it was a store model I understand the lag XD
The main thing about this decision is I would like a tablet layout and not a phone UI, but if I had to I could go without.

I know you said no rooting. But google has the n7 at a weird dpi. Change it and you have tab mode. Need root thou..

Then root I will haha. I'm getting ready to root my Galaxy S II, and this is my first time rooting. So if this goes well, I'll be rooting the Nexus 7...once I get one.

Since you just decided to root, thought I should let you know, someone over at XDA has confirmed that if rooted, USB OTG is possible using an application called StickMount. Thats why I got the 8 GB. I have tons of flash drives and I'm definitely rooting.

Successfully rooted and using AOKP on my phone haha. I should be fine rooting the Nexus 7 now :D
