Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire?

Cohoman - there's a better answer to get the play store. I wrote about it in the fire forum. Pretty much it's a Windows program that adds the correct files to the correct folders for you, then you install a link (also through a simple apk install) to put the market in the app store.

Nexus 7 of course! Order it now, and you may be able to get it in time for your birthday.

The Kindle has advantages that many are underplaying. It's REALLY easy to get the Google Play store. Yes you have to root, however someone wrote a program that does it for you even with the latest software. Then you download the market app which is really just a shortcut to add it to the favorites on the kindle.

Secondly some people like the Amazon eco-system. It's what the Kindle does best.

But besides Amazon Instant Video, you can have access to Amazon ecosystem on the Nexus 7.

Yeah, unless you use Amazon instant video, there's literally no reason to get a Fire over a Nexus 7 because you can get all of your Amazon media on any other tablet.

Amazon Instant Video has almost the same level of content that Netflix and Hulu have on them. So it's not a total loss.

I actually rooted my Kindle Fire and installed a slightly modified version of the Kindle Fire OS which had the Google Play Store included which worked well. But, there were still limitations in what apps I could install because not all the necessary packages and library files were available in the Kindle Fire OS as you would find on a true Android OS device. Installing a custom ICS ROM helped, there were still a few hardware glitches.

not to mention Amazon Instant Video can be played from a browser so there is no reason to go with Fire. Nexus 7 ftw. also, dont forget Nexus 7 is Jelly bean and Fire will never get an upgrade from what it has except some bug fixes.

That would be true only if Jelly Bean had flash support. However that being said I am still confused why this is even a discussion. Who with $200 in their pocket would even think twice to buy the Kindle Fire? The Nexus 7 has officially made the Kindle Fire look like an outdated piece of garbage.

I have a (possibly) unique perspective on this question...

I am a loyal Amazon customer, and have been since the very first days of Prime membership (back in 2006). As a loyal Amazon customer, and Kindle afficianado, I got a Kindle Fire on the very first day they were released. I have used it every day since then. I have loved the 7" size, and the integration of books, music, movies, and apps.

Having said all of that, I have to admit that I just sold my Fire and preordered the 16GB N7. Here's why: The Kindle for android app will allow me to read all of my books just like on the Fire. The Amazon MP3 app will let me listen to all my music, just like on the Fire. But the N7 has twice the processor, twice the RAM, twice the ROM, bluetooth, and access to the entire Android marketplace. Plus, you can still access the Amazon app store if you really want to.

The only thing you can't do is watch Amazon Instant Video. This is really going to suck for me, because I have bought a lot of movies and TV shows on Amazon, and really enjoyed downloading them to the Fire to watch offline. Still, I decided to go with the N7 because all of the other benefits outweighed the loss of AIV.

The only possible spoiler would be the Kindle Fire 2 which is probably going to be announced at the end of the month.

Reading your post, i would have waited to see what the kindle 2 was offering because you seem to have invested a lot on Amazon already.

Considering you are asking this on a Nexus 7 forum...

But seriously, it's hardly a valid question. Nexus 7, nuff said.

As an owner of the Kindle Fire. It is very limited, if you have an android phone. You will feel left out. At least I did.

With the N7 everything that you could have on your phone, you'll be able to have on your tablet. Everything syncs with your google account.

I liked my Kindle Fire, but only because I never owned any other tablet. I didn't like that I didn't have an SD slot, but I lived with it. I didn't like the no camera option, but it wasn't a big deal for me.

I didn't like the no bluetooth, which got on my nerves a little bit (Because It actually have a BT chip in it). But above all was that I couldn't access google play. The only good thing about the kindle app market is their daily free app.

If you have an amazon prime account, the kindle might be worth it for you though.

Google Play actually works quite well on the Kindle. You have to manually install it then install a shortcut to it but there are programs written to do it for you. I posted a link in the Kindle section. I have the App Store, Music Player, and Reader all from Google.

As I've said before, if you like Amazon like some people like Apple get the new Kindle when it comes out. The UI is simply amazing. It's in the details and how your cloud content is right there.

For Droid, get the Nexus. Me, I have both. You only live once and 200 dollars may be a lot of money but if you spend it now you'll never regret it.

I just remembered what annoyed me. Seeing the light meter but Amazon has it disabled. Apps can't get access to it because it's fully disable. I didn't know it had BT. If the Nexus didn't exist I could see why people put other droid versions on it. Assuming that turns those chips on.

I waffled back and forth on that quite a bit. In the end, the only thing I am losing is Amazon Instant Video on my tablet. I can still watch AIV on my Roku, Xbox, or laptop. What I gain, however, is something that the Kindle Fires will never have: access to the full android marketplace.

That's pretty cool. I still would, unfortunately, have to stream them. Whenever I watched video on my Fire, I usually did it when I knew I wasn't going to be in a wifi area, so I downloaded the movie to the tablet so that I could watch it anywhere. If I am somewhere there is wifi, I would rather watch AIV on my laptop or TV.

Still, it is nice to know that it is possible to stream to the N7. Thanks for the info.
