Nexus 7 tablet running very slow and stops responding. What could the issue be?

Nexus 7 tablet running very slow and stops responding

I have a nexus & tablet for about two years but in the last while it has been running very slowly. When i press on anything it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes to open and some dont even open, i get a not responding message. I have deleted apps to free up space and changed my background to a static colour. There is loads of space on it. I have also cleared the cache and have no widgets running only the clock. Any ideas on what to do or what would help to get it to run quicker???? Also i read somewhere that if you disable currents syncing it could help, however i cant find the currents app on my tablet but if i go into settings and look under apps it there.Any ideas how to get the app back on my home screen? thanks

It is probably time for a factory reset, that usually clears out the cobwebs and sets it straight.
