Hi
Sorry if this has been discussed (I'm sure it has but a search didn't find what I wanted to know- I did find some other forum questions which answered my queries)

I have got a nexus 4 and am really enjoying it (came from being long time iphone user). I am in the market for a larger device for when travelling (books, tv browsing etc) and considering the nexus 7.

My question is do you think I should get the cellular nexus7 or just get the cheaper 16gb version and tether? My network allows tethering and I'm not worried about data allowance but wondered if spending the extra ?100 would benefit me in the long run?

How well does tethering work between a 4 and a 7? Is there any slowdown? Is it quick to connect? I'd get annoyed if there was loads of steps to go through just to connect the 7 and equally I'd be Annoyed if I felt it would be quicker just to use my phone.

A lot of time I will. Be in hotels/ airports with free wifi but have also noticed that sometimes in these situations cellular can be quicker than the free wifi!!!

Sorry for loads of questions but I hoped you guys could help as I don't know anyone who tethers a nexus 7.

I have tethered my Nexus 7 to a rooted Galaxy Express (for ATT), and it worked great. Used the Foxfi app and it was easy setup as well as nice speed on LTE.

I tether my nexus 7 to my old galaxy mini when I'm at work. Works great and saved the difference in cost. But just understand WiFi hotspot on mobile drains your mobile battery faster and you then have two devices to charge up and carry around. Not sure if the nexus 4 uses LTE or not but there is a huge speed increase over 3g. So that's one benefit of going with the LTE model but one that I wasn't personally bothered with.

I have the 32Gb wifi version which I tether off my Galaxy S3. No app is needed & once you've set it up the first time the Nexus 7 instantly finds & connects to the hotspot. I've never had a problem, but as the previous member says, battery life on your phone is compromised.

I've tethered to my Galaxy Nexus just fine in the past, but I hate tethering because it drains the phone's battery so much. That's one of the reasons why I got the Nexus 7 LTE rather than just the WiFi version. It was also easier for me to justify because T-Mobile is giving everyone free 200MB of data every month and the iPad mini with cell data costs nearly $300 more.

Thanks all. Very useful info. I just discovered I had ?50 in my paypal account I didn't know about so thinking I might just stump up for the lte version. I'm going back and forward almost every hour though!!!

Ha! That's like finding money in your pant pockets after you take it out of the laundry!

I'll chime in and say tethering works fine, but I prefer the LTE model. It takes under a minute to take out your phone, turn on the "wifi hotspot" feature, put away your phone, take out your tablet, turn it on, and wait a few seconds for it to connect to wifi. Then you gotta remember to take out your phone again and turn off the hotspot feature when you're done (something I used to forget). But this can get to be a pain if you do this many times during the day. The convenience of the LTE model is that you just start using your tablet instantly. It really is a big convenience. I love my LTE. I used it's Spotify streaming via bluetooth feature daily in my car.
