Nexus 7 won't work with OTG cable

Hi

I have a Nexus 7 (2013) that sees nothing whjen I connect a camera or a USB stick via an OTG cable.
OTG Troubleshooter and OTG Helper both say the device supports OTG, and will both see the OTG cable (I have two cables which are both seen).

However neither app, not Nexus Media Importer, can see any device attached to the adapter.

I have tried this on two separate Nexus 7s.

I should add that one of the Nexus tablets used to see my camera and control it, but stopped after the OS was updated to 6.
THe second Nexus is brand new, is on Android 5 and cannot see any device on the OTG cable.

Does Android 5 support OTG in the kernel? All I see on the internet suggest so and says this should work, but it just doesn't.

Thanks for any help
Nick

I've been using Nexus Media Importer with my N7 (13) and OTG for years with no issue. I don't know what your issue could be.

Odd isn't it?
But there are people who say you must root the device; there are people who say you need Nexus Media Importer; there are people who say it just works.
Who is right among all these and why are there so many diverse views?

But it makes no difference - I have tried all three approaches and I have tried the last two on 2 different Nexus 7s, one of which is newly arrived from the vendor today. Nothing works.

Definitely, that is weird. I've never rooted my N7. I don't even know what to recommend for you to proceed from here.

Best of luck though. Please post your solution when you do find it.

Have you tried ES File Explorer... or StickMount?

I take it the USB is using the FAT file system?
Well, I have tried USB memory stick with FAT file system yes.
I have also tried other devices - for example the Nexus should be able to see my DSLR camera using remote shooting software and it doesn't.

Well, I ordered a StarTech OTG cable on the basis the two I had tried were unbranded and StarTech have had a number of recommendations and are often listed as tested and working with Nexus 7.
No joy with the camera BUT - ES File Manager can see the USB stick!!
Progress of a sort. Just need to get the camera visible now.

Well, the camera showed up for a while after I switched to PTP. And the camera control software worked!
But now it's stopped again.

Hi I have a nexus 7 and have the same problem as you.
I have tried the same apps as you, with one exception, have you downloaded the usb host driver from play store!.
I have had some success it works with my laptop fine but does not recognise flash drives.
I like you have ordered a startech otg cable I will see if that makes a difference.
The otg cable I have got works with a hudl but not with the nexus.
I will let you know how I get on.

nexus 7 2013 wifi here
I soft bricked my upgrade to marshmallow from a rooted 5.1.1 install
after I got it straightened out and marshmallow installed - I am just unlocked
I just now stuck into the usb port my short right angled otg cable with a thumb drive plugged in.
The screen just popped up and opened right into the main folder on that sd card, and I clicked open a text file from it and read it.
I don't have a helper app installed to do this
but I do have es file manager - but that did not open when I plugged it in.
wierd how many problems are with some users and not others, all using the same hardware.
I got my otg cable from ebay quite a while ago, I remember back then, "it was the cable to buy"
I'll see if I can find a receipt from my gmail account.
