Nexus has a PenTile screen?

Looks like a couple of articles are out today about the Nexus having a PenTile screen and potentially not being as great as imagined.

I know a lot of people were complaining about this for the Bionic as well. Any thoughts on how big of an issue this is, and if it's true?

We'll have to wait and see. The biggest issues will be on gradients and text, because that's where its most noticeable. (and no, the increased ppi isn't going to make a difference with that)

Also, the type of pentile Samsung uses is not as offensive to the eye as what Motorola used. Samsung uses RGBG while Moto used RGBW. The RGBG version is not nearly as noticeable, and much easier to get used to.

The Nexus One has one and I love that screen. As long as you don't set it down right beside another phone, most people will probably not even notice.

Yep, it's the color of the subpixel that matters... not if it's a pentile configuration. Pentile is not the enemy.

The white subpixel on the Bionic was teh poo. That thing was unparalleled in direct sunlight though.

The PenTile debate is silly. I just read an article on a website that said the Nexus having a pentile display already tells him not to purchase it. You know what's weird?

He wrote an article the day before saying how amazing the hardware was and that the screen looked great in his "in depth hands-on."

Compeltely silly. The Bionic's screen is good. If you look INCREDIBLY CLOSELY, then you will see the pentile sawtooth effect.

And in fact, it is widely known that Samsung does not use the same sub-pixel arrangement that Motorola does, as can be seen in the original Galaxy S. The original Galaxy S used Pentile displays, but they still looked great.

This is actually a good thing, isn't it? I thought these screens were great for battery life and for use in direct sunlight....

Yes, but at a resolution like 720p you wouldn't even notice the sawtooth anyway. It's a moot point on this phone, but people are scared because of screens like on the Atrix.

My Droid 3's PenTile display is absolutely horrific. Standard backgrounds look like they are diagonally cross stitched because the subpixles are staggered. If Samsung uses RGBG it probably won't be as noticeable but it does decrease the effectiveness of the high resolution at least a little compared to other non PenTile displays.

I will try to hold judgement to see how Samsung's implementation of PenTile paired with high resolution actually looks in practice, but it does make me a little sad heating this news.

I have an Incredible, which is PenTile, and it really isn't as bad as people make it out to be, though I've heard that the standard PenTile effects are less noticeable on the DInc than on other phones like the DX2. I can definitely see the jagged edges on horizontal surfaces, but unless I'm extremely close to the screen they aren't bad enough to bother me at all.

Bottom line is that with the much higher pixel density, I am not concerned about having a PenTile screen at all.

Pentile is not news at all. And it doesn't matter one bit on this phone. Josh over at ThisisMyNext says the display is as good as, or better than the iPhone's. Josh is somewhat of an Apple lover too, but is generally very spot on with opinions and reviews if you know him. HIs description here:

Boost, I llike the droid 3's screen and I'm comparing that to a charge's screen

Anandtech has a great discussion on this on their website. Brian King took the time to go over it in detail in the article and in the comments. To sum it up, using Pentile with that sub pixel density on a larger display wont be bad at all. It should be a cleaner look than the SGSII which I currently use now. On top of that, readability in direct sunlight should be better and battery life due to using pentile will be better.

So better readability in direct sunlight, improved battery life, and (at least in theory due to the math), an improved display over the SGSII.

All I know is that I have a 800 x 480 Pentile SAMOLED display on my Fascinate (Galaxy S). I absolutely LOVE it. There are people that don't like AMOLED displays at all (too vibrant, not perfectly "accurate" colors or what have you). I know I love mine and that therefore I will love even more a 1280 x 720 display of the same technology.

I wonder if any of the screen doubters of the tech blog world hated the Galaxy S screens too? If not, there is no way they can hate on this one ..

wtf??? The Galaxy Nexus' Super AMOLED display is a minus, not a Plus -- Engadget

and some more discussion on it AnandTech - Confirmed: Galaxy Nexus Includes PenTile

I just want to know if the Galaxy Nexus screen is going to be as "good" as the iPhone 4's retina display. this is what's most important to me. i mean, supposedly, the difference in pixel density between the two is very small (329.65 for the iPhone 4S, and 315.83 for the Galaxy Nexus).

i'm pretty confused by the Engadget.com article. I currently have a Droid Charge. is the Galaxy Nexus going to have a screen that isn't nearly as good as the Super AMOLED Plus screen on the Droid Charge??? Because, it's very very clear that the iPhone 4S' retina display is much better than the screen on the droid charge.

Ignore the Engadget article, it seems to be link bait. Everyone who actually held one of these phones in their hands (including the Engadget people that went to Hong Kong) said the screen was fabulous. Ignore words from someone who hasn't even seen the real thing, they're just trying to stir up page clicks.

I was thinking the same thing. Endgadget when crazy over the phone.

FYI: Only the RGBW pentile variety gives better battery life, because the white pixels are more efficient.
