Nexus One and Sprint

All these posts about the Nexus going to this carrier or that carrier... the reality is that it doesn't go to ANY carrier... T-Mobile doesn't carry it... it's just that it works on AWS (1700), and there's an option to subsidize... but it's not sold by T-Mo, not carried by T-Mo...

So similarly, Sprint won't "get" it, if anything, there will be a CDMA version (Verizon already known), so that same phone should be able to work on Sprint (assuming the ESN isn't locked to VZW - which being that the current N1 is unlocked, i'd hope the CDMA version is "unlocked" as well - in the CDMA sense of the word obviously)...

Nexus One is a GOOGLE phone... it hasn't "gone" nor will it ever "go" to a carrier in the true sense of the word - it will never have a carrier logo on it.... and I'd be somewhat surprised if ever sold in a carrier's store... and that's the beauty of Google's model and approach.... totally carrier free phone... it's about time and I hope other manufacturers do this too (Nokia not-withstanding - as they suck as selling non-branded phones - they are a complete failure frankly here in north america)...

sorry, but thats not true. for a phone to work on sprint, it doesn't have to just be an unlocked cdma, but it has to be a phone that sprint has put in their database, or it won't work. sprint doesn't allow unlocked phones, only ones they've approved. sprint stopped allowing unlocked phones a long time ago. so it really doesn't matter if Google releases an unlocked CDMA, Sprint has to allow it for it to work. So the reality is that, unfortunately, it does matter. an unlocked cdma is worthless without sprints approval.

if Sprint doesn't allow unlocked phones as you say (I don't have any experience with Sprint) - the hard reality is that Sprint will NEVER get the Nexus One... it may end up with the Desire - which is HTC's device and would likely be Sprint branded (like the current Hero). The Nexus One as we know it - with NO branding - will never go to Sprint if they are unwilling to have an unlocked phone on their system... It's too bad they are so closed minded and stubborn on this policy... it's their downfall really.... they are the worst carrier for a reason... But maybe there's hope once WiMax really takes off and the SuperSonic is made available... but again... will be locked down and crippled by Sprint...

Yes I agree with some of the posters and what are the chances the phone will be in the database, it isn't branded and it works just like the one that is offered for tmo? I mean I would wonder if they would release a world phone version with dual gsm and cdma?

well, according to a rumor, somebody saw both the SS and the N1 in Sprint's database, but i'm not confident. They like to only have phones they can shove their sprint programs on. it would be a blow to a struggling company for them to be the only one not to have it

Regardless of the N1 or any particular model, there will undoubtedly be handsets of this newest generation on Sprint. Despite the short attention spans of some phone geeks, Sprint has never been without a high-end flagship device for long. Might not be the one you want but they have always been competitive. For a while they had the only other phone with 3GS-class specs (Palm Pre), the only Android phone with better specs than the G1 and Hero/Magic clones (Moment) and a couple of WM phones and Blackberrys. It wasn't until a few months ago that Verizon came out with the Droid and last month that HTC and Google put out their TMo-compatible Nexus One.

Likely Sprint will be getting something along the lines of the N1/Desire/etc. around summer time. Maybe even the Supersonic with which I'm hoping to replace my Pre.

Switching carriers for a handset is not really a good idea. Choose your carrier based on cost and coverage. They all typically get a few high end handsets every year.

No...

I was reading somewhere that the NexusOne is supposedly gonna be on board Sprint :)

Any sprint users around :o

I'm a Sprint employee I cannot speak for certain but no the Nexus One will not be coming to Sprint. Why? Because Sprint is going to wait for the HTC Supersonic. Why? Cause not only is it better the Nexus One in all ways (at least from specs I've seen) but it will also be Sprint's first 4G phone. Don't forget the HTC Legend (Hero 2) is coming soon to.

So all you Sprint users just wait til mid this year for the Supersonic, I promise you won't be dissapointed!

It's not that Sprint isn't unwilling to have unlocked phones its the fact they can't. Verizon and Sprint are both CDMA and only work here in the US. Yes the rest of the world (and AT&T and T-Mobile) are 3G and unlockeable. But it is a old network thats why Sprint and Verizon decided to go the CDMA route. But getting back on track, CDMA does not require SIM cards meaning its not as easy as to just pop in your SIM card from an unlocked phone and away you go.

it's somewhat unfair for sprint to say to sprint customers that they don't need the n1 because there is the supersonic. While sense is nice, except for widgets much of the important aspects of it have been incorporated into stock android. Plus. With sense, you have to wait months after and android release to get ur phone updated. With the n1, you get the update as soon as it's available, which is something people may value over sense

that's bogus... while i get your point from a world point of view - everyone knows GSM rules the global scene... there is nothing that SHOULD prevent a Spring phone from being used on Verizon's and vice-versa.... all it takes is switching allowing the ESN onto the network and assigning to the user's account... simple.... But Sprint in their infinite wisdom seems to block this from that i understand....

I have the Palm Pre on Sprint and N1 with Tmobile... I like my Palm Pre, but love my Sprint Coverage, and I love my N1, but dislike my Tmobile coverage.. so give me a N1 (or SuperSonic) on Sprint and I'm in Love with 1 device to use instead of 2...

Last time I checked, were talking about SprinT idk what or who has SprinG as a service provider. I can attest however, that gsm is better than CDMA just because you are not locked to a phone, I mean either with Sprint, but it's more of a hassle because you have to call CR and then give them the phones esn or w/e and with an unlocked phone, you can just pop out the sim card and switch phones. Which is why I got a 9630 from Sprint; and you can carry the phone abroad as well. That's a plus for most people.

As for the specs of the Supersonic, I haven't seen them anywhere or have I tried looking for it. The Sprint Employee "Steve" says it's better than the N1, what Android phone surpasses the N1? I'm skeptical into believing that the Supersonic is better than the N1 but we will have to see until the phone has ACTUAL released infor
ation. WiMax is supposed to make it better? But not every Sprint customer will have access to WiMax as it is still in testing mode and being expanded into more locations.

Not really a big deal if you buy continue to stay with the same provider and don't travel out of the country. I've never left the country and will continue to stay with sprint because of their pricing. I do travel all over this country for my job and sprint coverage is superb. I don't know why people still have a stigma about the coverage. My job gives me an ATT phone and laptop card, ATT may be slightly better in voice coverage, but the broadband network is terrible and hardly worked anywhere i was at. I've never been outside and wasn't able to make a phone call with my sprint phone, just in basements.

I would like to be able to switch from my PDA phone to a small clamshell phone for when i go out. Sprint could easily do that if they allowed you to register multiple handsets and then just simply go to your billing page and select handsets. Maybe make it an app on your android? Thought for you to do sprint? It would be much easier than swapping sims all the time.

This is my first post, because I am new to the android world. Always been a windows guy, but windows mobile phones suck. So android looks fun, and interactive, and fun, while still being professional. I am with Sprint and they always seem to disappoint with the phones they get in comparison to Verizon, or ATT. For example ATT gets the new HTC Desire while Sprint is reduced to the spec lagging Legend...which is barely better than the hero to truly dub itself the Hero 2. But if the supersonic comes to Sprint I am all in.

And for those who don't know the specs on the supersonic, it is an HD2 with OLED screen, sense and android 2.1 (even rumored to be first to come with 3.0).

Sorry for the ramble, but I am no expert but I have been searching all around for the right buy for my first android.

Ive been on board with sprint due to the SERO plan but they have completely let me down by not being able to use an Android device on my plan. The Nexus will separate itself from the devices on the market today...I just hope Sprint does keep up. They have been improving their leap towards the newest smartphones.

Unlocked CDMA

Guys. The ability of the N1 cdma to run on sprint is not the issue that affects the user being able to carry it onto their network. Their complete lack of ability to allow esn's not in their database is what does this. Neither sprint or any of their MVNO's allow non sprint devices on the network.

Verizon on the otherhand might not officially allow devices on but as anyone with online access knows, a quick login to your account and switch device is all it takes to get your device on there. (barring flashing required for non verizon phones) Big V MVNO's can and do allow other cdma devices on network by simply adding the device esn and off you go.

It's really a shame that sprint can't seem to find the light and open up the esn lock down to get on their network. (not to mention the spc locks they put on their branded phones).

Anyway. I know a bit off topic but it does apply. You "should" be able to buy a cdma or for that matter a world phone offered via google and be able to put that bad boy on the network of choice.

Didn't the FCC already rule that sprint had to do this in 2008?..

Back to bed. I'm rambling... *poof*
