No app update notifications

On my Pixel 2XL, I would always get notification shade update alerts for apps that had updates in the Play Store. On this S22 Ultra I do not get those. In order to see if there are any updates, I need to open the Play Store App and manually check. I have verified every setting I can find that might control this and still am left completely unaware of any app updates unless I go to the Play Store App>My Profile>Manage Apps & device. Then it will check for updates, and I can manually update if any are found.

I have read that some say this is normal behavior now. But others say that no, they still get notified right in their shade and can then update from there.

Can anyone enlighten me on this? I really want to know about app updates without having to remember every day to manually check. But if this is how Google is now forcing it to be done, I will stop trying to chase down the problem in my setup.

Thanks!

It should give you an update available notification if the setting is turned on in the Play Store. The main bugginess seems to be with the notification that an app was successfully updated, which hasn't worked on Pixel phones in a while (but which does work on my Galaxy A32 5G).

Make sure your Play Store app isn't set to be Battery Optimized in the system settings.

On my unlocked s22 Ultra, the toggle is under:

Google Play Store/Notifications/Notification Categories.

You may have already checked that setting, but just incase...
:)

Maybe toggling it off & then back on might kick it into gear.

(I do receive the notifications in the pull down shade.)

I have toggled that off and on. The only one I have off is the payments, deals and recommendations because I was getting too many spammy type deals and recommendations.

I have the Play Store set to unrestricted battery use.

I will try disabling and uninstalling all updates and then let it update and see if that helps. I find two slightly different settings places, (shown below) but both are set to notify when updates are available.

Uninstalled updates and then let it update itself back to the original version. Still not working. I just went into the store and when I clicked on My Profile>Manage Apps & device, then it showed one update available, but still there was no notification in the pull-down shade.

Does it also happen in Safe Mode?

I will try that tomorrow. The problem I foresee possible with that is knowing for sure. Because I can only know that it is not working correctly if I go to the play store and find updates that I have not been notified about. If I put it in Safe Mode, I will have to keep it there until I manually see that there is an update so may have to leave the phone in Safe Mode for a long time to know.

When I originally set up my phone I had some issues with certain apps not working properly, and some of the issues were with notifications. I figured out that it was because I transferred over all my stuff, including apps, from my old phone. Some of the apps did not like that and to fix them I just uninstalled them and reinstalled from the store. If that is the issue with the Play Store App, then not sure what to do as you can not uninstall that app, only uninstall all updates. (Which I already did). But thinking about that issue, it seems unlikely that is what is happening here because, I think, the Play Store comes already installed on the phone.

And one more odd thing is that if I go to Settings>Apps>Google Play Store and click on the "App details in store" I get the satellite page like it did not find anything. What does that mean?

might be an issue with the server & your device connection...
sometimes playstore issues can be fixed by logging out and back in (your google account from the phone as a whole in the settings > account management)
and clearing all data for the play service and Google app.

you can also submit error report to samsung members app > get help > error report after reproducing the issue to get help from samsung (they'll pass it on to Google if it's Google's issue).

I don't think you'd have to wait too long -- I get app updates every single day for at least one app. I'd just go to the Play Store whenever you want to check and look for the Updates Available section in Manage Apps and see if any are pending. If there are and you still didn't get any notifications, then Safe Mode didn't help.

I also checked the App Details In Store section for my Play Store listing, and got the same satellite screen, so I think that's normal -- the Play Store app isn't in the Play Store to begin with (because that would be Play Store Inception :p).

Thanks. The phone has been sitting in safe mode for about 1-1/2 hours. I still have not seen any notice about updates from the Play Store although the phone seems to be working fine in safe mode and I am getting some other notifications. (Like the one that just came to Gmail from this forum).

So as to my thought in post 8 above? Does that seem unlikely, or does it seem like it could be related? I am considering resetting the phone and then manually setting up everything rather than transferring a lot like I originally did. But that would be a lot of time and work, so I am not quite there yet. For now, I just check manually a couple of times a day. I will let Safe Mode sit a while longer and then go into the Play Store app and see if there are any updates waiting.

I did that and this is what happens. Like before, there are no updates waiting. However, when I go into >My Profile>Manage Apps & device, then it checks for updates. So now it just found one when I did that so there is one waiting. So maybe the reason I am not getting notifications is that there is no check for them happening until I manually go in to Manage Apps & device, at which point it checks for updates.

Left the Play Store with that one update sitting there and after a few minutes, there is still no notification.

It really sounds like the app is being kept asleep or something. Check this setting: www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00088422/

I agree that it seems unlikely, but I have certainly read about odd issues that can occur with Smart Switch, so it's not out of the question.

It really sounds like the app is being kept asleep or something. Check this setting:

That setting is off and the page there show no sleeping apps. It is odd that the app does not even seem to be checking for updates until I manually go into the store. But that may be unrelated as I did find one update when I did that about 30 minutes ago but still no notification about it. I may be left with resetting the phone as a last effort to fix this.

I haven't been getting update notifications either. I guess it doesn't bother me because I automatically go in the play store and check . Same for the Galaxy store.

Well this is interesting that I am not the only one. I wonder how common the issue is? At least that makes me think it is not something that resetting the phone might fix. I know if I depended on manually checking, eventually I would forget for a while and end up with 40 apps that are not up to date.
