No blur effects with live focus photos

So I didn't know that there were hours effects until I watched a video on the live focus feature. Apparently you can adjust the blur and then change the blur to little music notes or heart shapes etc.

Well, those little blur effects are no where to be found on my phone. Do I have to take a particular photo for them to show up? I have a taken a bunch of pics with live focus and I can adjust the blur amount all day long but no additional effects show underneath.

Am I missing something?

It only works for certain pictures. There has to be spots of light in the background

I think it also helps if the background is further back.
Edit: I should have mentioned that these are from my Note 8 though - in case it matters...
