No email in sleep mode?

I just bought a Driod and it seems that as soon as my phone goes into sleep mode that my emails do not download and notify me. As soon as I unlock the phone they download immediately, but what's the point? This is only for my POP home account, Gmail comes down fine in sleep mode. The email settings are set to "pull" them down every 15 minutes, but I don't sit around for 20 or 30 minutes screwing around with my phone, so why would I need that if it only pulls the email when the screen is on?

Am I missing something? Text messages and phone calls come in fine while in sleep, but I need my email.
