No free tethering with Nexus 6?

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I have a 10Gb mobile share plan and have been unable to turn on the tethering on my Nexus 6. It says there is a temporary problem that is preventing the hotspot function.

Yeah I just checked and am getting that message as well. I am on the same plan as you and came from a nexus 5.

EDIT: Followup-- Checked my account and my Nexus 6 doesn't actually appear to be recognized yet.

It is a shame Google agreed to the checks before allowing tethering to work.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Let me get this straight. There is no WiFi hotspot toggle or it won't let you tether after a subscription check? I'm on VZW unlimited and I pay extra for unlimited tethering. If I buy this phone I won't be able to tether?

Just got my nexus 6 and cut my micro sim into a nano and phone works fine with verizon. Bad news is that you cannot activate mobile hotspot. I even tried foxfi work key that works on my note 4 and no luck. I tried half a dozen other there apps with no luck. I'm on an unlimited plan too. Really frustrating since I don't want to root because my work email app checks for root.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Mobile Hotspot works great on T-Mobile with Nexus 6 purchased from Motorola.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Just want to chime in, I'm on AT&T's $60 GoPhone plan and Tethering works there as well. (I switched from Cricket where Mobile HotSpot didn't work since AT&T disallows MHS on Cricket for some reason?)

Anyway, it's nice to be able to do a HotSpot through GoPhone, even when I run out of my 2.5GB high speed monthly allotment since GoPhone now offers unlimited data when you pass that... though at very slow 128kbps, it's still useful if I need an emergency connection on another phone or computer... hooray!

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Chatted with AT&T, had them update my IMEI, rebooted phone and tethering worked!

I wonder if I had done the first boot with the AT&T SIM in the phone if it would have correctly registered service with AT&T...

It seems normal to me that they would have it work with the carriers. They want the carriers to accept their device :).

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I'm hoping this is the case for everyone. Would it be too much to ask for you to check the T-Mobile My Account app and see if you are using any data for tethering?

As you can see with my N4, I'm not using a single MB of tethering data although I use it daily. For everything in my apartment.

what app do you use for tether? are you rooted?

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Can anyone confirm using free built-in wifi hotspot using MOTO X 2014 Pure Edition on StraightTalk (AT&T SIM)?

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

My tethering works now. This is after rooting and restoring my phone to stock. It didn't work before I rooted it either. This is on At&t and I have a mobile share plan.

Edit: It still doesn't work, I had my TMobile sim in.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Just got my 6 and looks like tethering is NOT free anymore. Wtf...
On my 4 it wouldn't count against the Hotspot data and now it just depleted and can no longer tether.
I used the sim that came with the 6, if that matters.

Anyone find a workaround?

EDIT:
Looks like the
"tether_dun_required" is the sure fix.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

If you have a carrier variant its going to be blocked to appease the carriers and will actually track it and send the meta data to a carriers server

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

For what it's worth I am on ATT with a Moto sourced Nexus 6 with 30G of shared data and WiFi hotspot works fine as long as I start it from Android settings. The ATT app is kind of wonky, some days it works sometimes not....

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I've been reading that this is only affecting users on AT&T.
When I pick mine up on T-Mobile and its blocked, I may be forced to go back to my N4.

I use easy tether with nexus 6. I also have 5gb tether I use that I signed up for last year since it was a cheap promo. I definitely recommend this app, there are others like this, but it doesn't require root. It is 10$ one time, but its well worth it.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

You need to be rooted and with root manager you have to edit build.prop for att and sprint you have to edit file with sqlite database editor in the com.provider.settings folder edit settings database add this line
(Global)
tether_dun_required
Set value to 0 then save and reboot
Then boom goes the dynamite

Do you know what to do for verizon?

I have a non carrier model bought from play store. And it checks for subscription status. I'm on an unlimited plan with verizon.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I've got Verizon and my tethering works fine on Unlimited Data.

However, this should fix any issues if you are having problems:

If You have Root Explorer, go into the system files and edit the Build.prop file

add this line at the very end/bottom:

net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I see this discussion has been quiet for some time. I just acquired a N6 from Motorola and upgraded to 5.1.1. Then started using a Cricket SIM. All-in-All I am satisfied with the service, but tethering and hot spots were disabled.

I tired the settings.db method and soft bricked the device. So after getting everything back, I tried the build.prop method. Build.prop did enable the tethering and hot spot capability, but... Case-in-point, when I tried to USB tether, I could enable it on the device, but when trying Chrome on my Mac, it would just sit there and spin and never connect to the network. I had an alternate tetherable phone and it worked just fine so I know it is not the Mac.

I assume that even with build.prop mod, that AT&T is still locking down connectivity with Cricket.

Have others seen this?

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I was able to find my problem... Tried installing a driver just for the Nexus 6 and essentially came up empty and Motorola Device Manager did nothing to help the problem. Google references to seeing Nexus 6 on the Mac were also worthless.

In the end I did find a solution from Joshua Wise. He wrote a NDIS solution to get Android devices to show in Apple Mac Networking. Search Google for HoRNDIS and you should find the solution quickly. It installs quickly and works great. Once installed, the tethering process worked like a charm.
