No free tethering with Nexus 6?

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

It took much searching to find the solution... not sure if the issues are on the Apple side or Google side, but Apple Mac Networking can not see the Nexus 6 device, so that is why the tethering never worked. I was able to find a solution from Joshua Wise who wrote a NDIS package to allow Android devices to be seen in the Apple Mac Network Configuration panel. Once the device is visible in networking, everything worked great.

You guys seriously don't read well do you??? Tethering has been blocked by Google themselves.. It's built into the OS.. Ireacon they finally got tired of the carriers ******** about it.. Google themselves have blocked UN paid tethering.. It's actually baked into all android 5.0 and up

Not to say there aren't any work around but off hand there's no native support

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I may have missed something in the discussion BUT ...
If you are on unlimited data you have to pay for tethering. If you have a limited plan, I am on 10 Gig plan, you can tether, it just uses your data. To test I just set tethering on my Nexus 6, setup password, and turned on. I then tethered with my Kindle. Did not pull out my laptop to test on it but have no reason to believe it will not work.

I am with Verizon.

I'm on an unlimited plan. I would have to pay for it yes! But if your have tethering built in your data plan should be no issue.

As an unlimited user I understand your wishes. The facts are that Verizon required a tethering plan to tether at all. That was challenged and they agreed that those who had limits did not have to have a tethering plan. All wishes aside no wireless provider ever intended for a hotspot to allow users to do away with all other internet plans. Wireless and the internet have evolved. Not expecting plans and permitted uses to evolve is unrealistic.

Use the rom chroma, and you are good to go. No issues here with my Nexus 6 at all. Only downside is that there is not a marshmallow build yet.

I paid for easytether pro years ago, just used it the other day. Possibly one of the best purchases I ever made from the Google play store.

I have the 30gb family shared data plan with AT&T, and I have no problem enabling the WiFi hotspot feature on my Nexus 6. No additional charges for it either.

Yep. If you have a limited plan you should never run into an issue -- and it would actually be against FCC rules for them to charge you extra to tether when paying for a limited amount. The additional fee / other issue only pertain to unlimited users.

I'm not a rookie to rooting or tethering but something weird happened the other day while trying to edit the "build.prop" file to enable tethering.

after adding the required line to the contents it would not allow me to save the edited file. I closed and reopened and the file to try with a different editor and the file contents was completely empty. WTF!!! does anyone have a build.prop file I can copy to my phone on AT&T carrier. I am scared to reboot because it probably won't restart at all and I'll have to wipe the device.

Anyone upload one and help me out a bind?

Thanks all!
Chris

Just a FYI. Just found out that its disabled. If I can't find a legal workaround this phone will go back. First vanilla android phone I have to have this stupid lock.

First who is your carrier, second is it a Google Nexus 6 or a carrier nexus 6, my Google Nexus 6 is "not the Verizon Nexus 6" on Verizon and I have the tethering feature, you need to be unlocked and rooted to use this feature, that's the reason people buy Nexus devices, they are easy to modify to your liking. I use the Pure Nexus ROM.

I have a non carrier model bought from play store. And it checks for subscription status. I'm on an unlimited plan with verizon.

You need to be unlocked and rooted to use the tethering feature, I am also on Verizon with a Google Nexus 6 and Nexus 5X, both are running Pure Nexus ROM, I used Wug's toolkit to unlock and root my devices, once you unlock and root the device, go and flash Pure Nexus ROM which has many great features that stock is missing, plus the tethering feature.

Just use Wug's toolkit to unlock and root the device, then go flash the Pure Nexus ROM, the tethering feature is build into the ROM, plus many other features.

I am using a rooted nexus 6 purchased from Sprint. I have an unlimited family plan. I've edited the biild prop and settings db..tethering works fine since release date with no tethering charge against my account.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

You need to be rooted and with root manager you have to edit build.prop for att and sprint you have to edit file with sqlite database editor in the com.provider.settings folder edit settings database add this line
(Global)
tether_dun_required
Set value to 0 then save and reboot
Then boom goes the dynamite

Just flash Pure Nexus ROM, the tethering feature is build in, and many other great features, and it's rock solid, my daily driver from my Nexus 6 and Nexus 5X.

No issues with a non carrier branded nexus 6 on att here. Says checking subscription status and then enables.
