No gmail counter?

I had a Galaxy necus prior to the Note 2 and have missed the notificstions counters. Why does mail have one but gmail lacks this? Is there a setting I may have overlooked? Thanks!

The native Gmail app doesn't come with a counter. You need a 3rd party app/widget/mod for that.
