No Google Wallet=Travesty

nope. For some odd, stupid, idiotic reason, the NFC chip is ON THE BATTERY. This is NOT the case for the Nexus S, but apparently, the Galaxy Nexus has the NFC chip on the battery. As well, the battery will not pass the NFC state on to the phone unless a token is registered between it and the device. I'll bet this is from Verizon to fight rooting. It's probably encrypted and has a proprietary protocol that's going to be a pain to reverse-engineer.

Think it may only be the nfc antenna in the battery. The antenna was in the battery door on the S.

For me, I don't care about google wallet. Not a deal breaker at all. Is it really that hard to use a debit card? It's not like google wallet is used everywhere anyway. Where I'm from, I doubt I'd be able to use it anywhere. Could be wrong, but don't care to find out. Debit card works for me. People complain too much. Google wallet isn't even on the Nexus S, Just the S 4G. Officially, that is.

It works anywhere mastercard paypass works. It's the same reader hardware.

McDonalds, 7eleven, Target, Walmart, Macy's, Coke machines, taxicabs, gas pumps, etc...

There's a paypass app that will tell you places around you where it can be used.

Wow. This is the dumbest thread ever. I have a credit card with NFC in it and I never use that. I just swipe it. The person who wrote the OP seems to have a real aversion to carrying an actual wallet. Even if GW was included in this device without root you would need to carry an actual wallet, money clip, purse, etc. for a driver’s license, insurance cards, and god forbid cash.

Seriously this is not a big deal at all. For the love of god this app only works on ONE phone from ONE carrier in the US. So tell you what son, go out and buy the Nexus S on Sprint, root and get the ICS rom and use Google wallet and stop crying. And to echo several posters here this is no way a travesty of any kind. I am assuming that you are the type of guy that describes anything that is funny as hilarious, or food at a fast food joint as delicious. Cool it on the unnecessary adjectives, buy the GNex and have a lovely day, or don't.

Commence flaming me now...

When debit cards were first introduced I quickly got one and realized that most of the smaller retailers and gas stations did not accept them........I avoided them like the plague and only shopped where I could use it. Today I can use it everywhere and rarely ever have cash on me. I don't use checks at all. In my very small neck of the woods I have already taken notice to a fairly decent amount of retailers who accept paypass a number of them being gas stations, grocery stores, fast food and convenience stores I frequent. I was looking forward to using google wallet, in fact it was a major feature I was geeked up about. I don't like carrying my wallet and this could have allowed me in most instance to leave my wallet locked in my car and just carry my phone........count me as dissapointed.......not just that I can't use gw but that verizons isis is not even a fallback option........because it doesn't currently exist.

I think the "travisty" is the carrier deciding what apps we can and can't have.

I have a Google Nexus S 4G on Sprint. One of the main things that drew me to it was the "pure Google" experience...no carrier involvement in apps. I don't have the Sprint Nascar app, I don't have Sprint TV, I don't have some snazzy UI overlay that I can't uninstall.

Oh, and I have Google Wallet.

Yes, right now it's in its infancy. But, the more phones that have it, the more places will look into setting up to accept it.

I was very disappointed that the iPhone 4GSII Beta Gamma didn't have NFC built in. As much as I hate Apple products, if they're done some implimentation of it, it would TAKE OFF!!

And, for the poster who won't look into it until "100% of places accept it", good luck with that.

What form of payment is accepted in 100% of places?

Credit Cards? Nope. There's a good Vietnamese place just down the stree that stopped taking credit cards. Cash only.

Cash, of course. Nope, Louisiana recently passed a law making it illegal to use cash for "secondhand transactions".

I can't even begin to count the number of places that won't take a check.

For me, life is about options. I want as many options as possible. I'm an adult. Let me decide how much security risk I'm willing to take on. If you buy a phone with Google Wallet and you don't feel comfortable putting your credit card number into it...don't.
