No GPS signal with new Motorola Triumph

Hi,
I'm a total noob with Android, but I am working to learn as much as possible. I just got a Motorola Triumph a few days ago, and I've never been able to get a GPS signal. I really don't want to send it back, especially since I rooted it (using the easy root method with emulator and sudo).

Is there a setting or a way to fix the GPS? Other than that I like the phone and would like to keep it. I tried to go to Motorola's site and was blown away by how unhelpful it was. It doesn't even list my phone in the support section.

If I put a custom ROM on it, will that make any difference? If so, which one should I put on? I was thinking (after bricking my previous phone last week) that I wouldn't put a new ROM on it, but if it means I'd have GPS, then I'll do it.

Thanks in advance! :)

CM7 or MIUI should be better. It's not guaranteed, but there has been work done in that area on those ROMs.

Also this phone is almost impossible to brick, so you should be safe to flash ROMs.

Thank you so much! Ok! That's so good to know!
Can I ask another noob question? My MT has Froyo 2.2 on it. Can I use CM7 for Gingerbread? Or do I have to use a ROM for Froyo?

Thanks so much! :)

Yes you can do that. You can flash any MT ROM you want (2.2 or 2.3). Just make sure it is one made specifically this phone.

Just a quick update. I rooted my Motorola Triumph, then installed a version of CM7 with the help of the guides on here.

Unfortunately I still can't get the GPS to lock onto a signal at all. Is there a better radio I could get? I installed GPS Status and Toolbox but it can't get a signal either. :(

Yeah, I've been having a hell of a time with this issue, too

Ever since I've had my MT (bought it early Dec. 2011), the GPS has NEVER worked. Period. I've flashed buttloads of ROMs, used some Market and non-Market apps to try to fix it, I've even replaced and/or rewritten my gps.conf and SuplRootCert files in /system/etc, but nothing has worked thus far.

I'm beginning to wonder if this phone of mine even CAME with GPS hardware at all, at the rate it's going. Nothing has made it work. It's not even giving an inaccurate reading (something like pinpointing to within 1,000-10,000 meters) for that matter. I've never tampered with the hardware on this phone at all, besides a battery pull here and there from bootloops caused from certain ROMs.

Did it simply just...break or something on my phone? I've literally given EVERY OPTION a chance, but no luck.

I hope there's no major problem going on that would require me to replace this phone. Not only would it be a hassle to restore it to stock (I have a custom recovery, boot logo, splash image, ROM, theme, all that jazz) in order to return it, but idk how much (if anything) I can get back for it if I did. It's been longer than the usual 30-day return policy at Best Buy. UGH....a reliable, true, near 100% fix for this MAJOR issue would be GREATLY appreciated. My phone is what I use when I go on trips, it's my directions most of the time, can't afford one of those expensive, half-ass Tom Tom or Garmin units.

It completely destroys the purpose of having a "smartphone" if the damn GPS won't function... :(

Here's a screenshot of a GPS testing app from the Market, ironically named "GPS Test", that I used to see what was wrong. The indicator stays yellow when the GPS (both wireless & satellites) are on, when it should turn green if it's working, and it shows no other information. I'm beginning to worry here...

I know. I flashed the new ROM to see if that would help, but it's not looking good. It has never gotten a signal. I really want my phone to have GPS. That's one thing a "smart" phone should do!

But if you (and how many others) are also having this problem, maybe I should return it now while I still can! Sigh. Other than that I really like this phone though. :( :-\

I'm just hoping that the GPS isn't actually "broken", in this sense...If I actually get to the point where I HAVE TO take it back, I'm definitely not getting another replacement Triumph. This damn thing has been tossing one issue after the other at me since day one; signal issues (has improved after I replaced the stock PRL with Sprint's 1120 one, but nonetheless still noticeably buggy), dropped calls, glitchy screen (after turning screen on/off with stock Froyo ROM, portrait video viewing with CM7), temporary non-responsive capacitive buttons and screen, Bluetooth gave static & didn't work with most handsets on stock firmware (literally HAD to install CM7 to get that functional), sticky power button, the list goes on.........and on.........

Another $300 down the drain if this really is a hardware problem. *sigh*...you'd think I would've learned from having so many family members and friends complain about their piece-of-**** Motorola smartphones. Even my mom (who has a Droid RAZR) complains all the time about her phone. It's Verizon, they have great service (horrible data costs, but that's beside the point). And don't even get me started on the original DROID, Droid 2, 3....except for MAYBE the Droid X, Motorola doesn't exactly have a good history IMO. Lol....I feel sorry for that "deal" Google made :D

My first MT had terrible GPS performance, despite custom roms and various fixes. The replacement works great. I restored my backup from the SD card, so it was really easy to switch phones.

I think people are getting bad hardware and thinking it's a software problem. If I were in your situation I wouldn't hesitate to have the phone replaced.

Oh, ok, so if I want to do that, can you help me back up my custom ROM and settings onto my SD card?

I would greatly appreciate it, and thanks so much for letting me know it's probably hardware. I will return it as soon as I get it back to stock.

Oh, and how do I do that?

Thanks so much!
