No Message Notification Tone if message thread is open

I recently upgraded from Samsung Galaxy S4 to Galaxy S7 Edge. It was working fine in S4 but in S7 it seems they broke it.

In S7 Edge, no Message Notification tone is played if the message thread is open. To get the tone working again, I have to exit the thread every time I send or receive a message from same contact. This is really annoying because a lot of times I exchange many messages with the same contact and in between messages I will put my phone aside to do other stuff while leaving the thread open. I never come to know when my contact sent another message.

Anyone knows if there is a fix for this ?

Hey there. No fix that I know of unless you download a 3rd party app like Textra. It's something that disappeared with either KitKat or Lollipop. It irks the crap outta me.

It worked in KitKat. In my S4 I had KitKat and it was working fine.

Just wondering if it is possible to backup and restore Messaging app from my S4 (which had KitKat) and restoring to S7. Would that work ?

Your carrier may have an app that will let you back up all of your messages. I don't use mine though.
