No Push Email On Evo Except From Gmail? Huge Plus for Palm Pre!

Now if I could only find a nice widget to go along with K-9... Haven't found one I liked so far.. Any suggestions? I liked having the icon for mail and the number of unread emails on my homescreen. The K-9 one just sits there.

Former Pre User not liking Evo

Maven and Ghost, I agree that this email situation is unacceptable. I will try some of the free apps, however, my frustration with everything "Android" is that you either have to pay for something or deal with Ad Apps that run in the background and suck battery. I have an auto kill app and even with that about 15 apps are running on their own everytime I unlock my phone. Basic apps such as Mail should be standard AND ROBUST considering Google's gmail popularity.

Some of the Google-heads here discount this email situation, however, they better be careful. It is true that most users don't have more than one email and are looking more for the media stuff (in fact, i read somewhere 80% of teenagers only use email for registration and don't even check it - all they do is text), but a) the corporate market is just starting to leverage RT/offsite employee connectivity (a big market) and b) a great deal of teenagers get smartphones as hand-me-downs from their parents who DO care about email.

Evo does seem to be a lot faster than the Pre, but it is not as intuitive or functional, and it is ginormous. If the HP can provide some better Hardware for the Pre, I'd switch back in a second.

Yahoo problems are caused by Yahoo. Yahoo just released an app made by Yahoo that should work with Yahoo just fine. I use maildroid and the dev is VERY responsive to feedback through the forums and keeps users updated pretty regularly about what's going on with the app.

If you really wanna know if maildroid can do push send him a PM through these forums since that's his primary means of answering questions and getting feedback.

Unless I'm not understanding something completely, though, push email is a server side service and an app on the phone wont' magically make it push. All the Pre does is poll constantly for email, and that's still pull, not push, because the phone is doing all of the work and eating battery horribly by doing this.

You think this might be due to the fact that you are using Android (which is a google mobile OS) and they have their own email (GMAIL). I can understand why they would make it so seemless with GMAIL push and not others.

EAS is still an important feature that should be supported. HTC mail supports one account, only, and for some this is limited.

I'm getting Exchange push just fine using HTC's client. I haven't missed an email or a calendar notice/invite/event yet.

Oh... and one more thing.

I have multiple inbox subfolders setup with exchange side rules. HTC's client does not automatically retrieve emails to these subfolders nor does it notify. I am a long time BB user that made the switch to EVO, the HTC's mail client is very lacking in comparison. I did download Touchdown by Nitrodesk and is a very good alternative. However, it costs $20. With all that being said, I still prefer the EVO for all it's other features. If or when RIM comes out with a suitable touch screen, there is no doubt I will give it a hard look. Email is that important.

I dont know what I am missing here but the Gmail app in Android works perfectly for recieving all my emails except exchange. I use touchdown for exchange (work) which is fine because I like to keep work email, calendar and contacts seperate anyway.

First thing I did was scrub the HTC email app icon and replace it with the Gmail. then I setup my gmail, hotmail and home ISP (charter) accounts on the gmail website. All accounts now push from the server to the phone in one big happy folder. I set Gmail to respond to each account with THAT accounts email address whenever I reply to a sender. Meaning if I get an email from hotmail and I reply to sender then the sender sees the reply coming from my hotmail address. this is the same with the other accounts so there is no confusion from my email recepients. Its default account is setup to be my charter account so if I start a new email then it sends from that. When I read my emails I really dont care which account it came from but if I look in the title I can see which email account the sender sent to so I still know if I am reading a charter, hotmail, or gmail email even though they are all in the same folder.

I also noticed in the Gmail app that after hitting menu you have several folder options as well.

Aside from not playing well with Yahoo, I cannot see how this gmail push wouldnt work for for most of us. In fact it more then covers my email needs and the push saving battery is a huge plus!

He's looking for specific things for EAS support. The gmail push trick won't work for him. Android is admittedly lacking in this area, with supposed improvements coming in Froyo. I have not seen anything where anyone has tested the improved EAS support in Froyo, though.

Multiple EAS accounts is a really rare consumer feature. I'd venture < 1% Evo owners need a dedicated multiple EAS-push device. For my work EAS account and personal GMail account, the Evo is flawless. I like things separated and never really understood the desire for an integrated inbox. Way too much e-mail clutter for me to dive through to see what's work/personal/urgent/etc.

But I know, I know...it's all personal preference.

I agree, but for that small percentage that need it it's a non-negotiable. They HAVE to have it.

I tottally agree that this push e-mail thing is horrible. I mean I get my google push and my active sync push for work, but it is totally rediculous that my personal mail can only pull every few minutes. I need to know NOW that aunt Ginny heard that Microsoft is giving away $50 for forwarding this e-mail.

Come on people.. if your mail is that important then invest in an exchange server, if it is not that important stop :(

The definition of a fanboy answer. Platform A can't do something platform B can, so therefore it must be your fault.

Considering the size of the Pre I would call this only a small plus. Or possibly even would be a better way to describe it. Sorry.

The Pre did this but fooled you into doing it haha. The phone is polling the server constantly for AOL or Yahoo. It did GMail legit however.

Honestly though...this is Google's platform. They have a vested interest in getting people on GMail ani bet you there are people that moved to GMail just for the easy of syncing.

But seriously..who needs email THAT quickly that 15 minutes polling is not enough time for them.

I have an AOL (gasp) account but i'm gonna drop it and just use Gmail since prefer it to other email clients right now. But if i didn't..i'd just set up mail forwarding with Gmail.

I have an exchange server, which IS the problem not the solution. Just wishing HTC would improve on its exchange active sync (EAS). If they did, they would get a lot more BB converts. For people that use exchange and receive all their emails to the main inbox, it works well enough. A lot of business users don't, which is why BB is so entrenched in the enterprise.

Well, the EVO has a nice big screen, and you can watch movies & play game, and surf the web. With the EVOs screen size surfing the web is nice.

Also, not alot of people have more than 1 email account. Most people out there are concerned about watching videos, (youtube is huge), making videos, playing games is also up there.

That is what most of the phone makers are looking at, its a business, so they look were they can make the most money. They figure let other phone makers worry about the small percentage of people that need more than 1 email.

That was horrible and untrue on so many levels. What pathetic reasons not to have a good email solution.

As you said, Google does not care much for the Business market, nor does it really care about any other email client.

They are in the business to sell ads.

As you have also said, most people dont care for much of anything except media. Phones are now a mobile media first, phone second, and if they can squeeze it in there PDAs

Not really, when you only have a limited amount of space, you need to put the most important things first.

Email is not as high on the list as media is..
