I've just received the nexus 7 and get no sound from the apps only from the google music thing. Any thoughts?

What troubleshooting have you done so far? That is a bit odd, I take it you have checked all the volume controls etc...
If this was purchased brand new I would suggest returning it and getting a replacement

Check Settings /Sound / Volumes, see what that all looks like.
