no texts notifications in car

I have an At&t s9 plus and a 2016 mazda 3.. my phone seems to pair ok through bluetooth.. I can make and receive calls.. I can play and control music/media from my phone.. but text messages are not coming through.. not even getting notified.... when I go through the settings notifications and text messages settings are greyed out.. any suggestions on how to fix this.. my previous phone galaxy 8 worked just fine.

text messages coming through now... I just keep disconnecting and then pairing the phone and eventually the message toggle appeared under the mazda bluetooth setting
