No unread notification counter on app icons when you swipe away the notification in the top bar?

Hi Samsung Galaxy S8 user here, just received Android 8 on my phone.

And for some reason everytime when I get a notification, of any app, and swipe it away. It doesnt show an "unread counter" on the app icon anymore like 1-2-3-4 etc. So when I swipe away the notification on top, I wont know if I got unread messages etc. Which forces me either to remember I got a notification, of which app, or open all apps to see which one it was. Which seems really retarded to me.

With WhatsApp, when a chat or group is put on silent (and with no notifications) there is no way I know I got a message without opening the app since it doesnt show an unread number counter.

When I use Spotify, it shows a "1" on the app icon like I got a notification and when I close Spotify, it disappears. It makes no sense at all to me.

The counter badge (with number) is turned on in the settings. I didnt had this problem with Android 7. So Im not really sure if this is an Android problem or its on the side of the app developers.

Anybody knows whats up?

Welcome to AC.

Reading the changelog for the Oreo update on that device, it seems the notification badges are working as designed, which is in line with the way the Pixel Launcher does them. Rather than duplicating efforts, maybe Samsung moved this feature to native code in AOSP rather than continuing the notification badges as previously known?

Home Screen – Touch and hold an app to display shortcuts to common or recommended tasks within the app (supported apps only). – Notification badges on app icons are linked with the notification panel. Clear a notification in one location, and it will also be cleared in the other location.

So basically they removed the whole "unread notification counter" feature from Android 8? How am I supposed to know which app got x amount of unread notifications without letting my whole top bar get filled with notifications? I mean wasnt that the whole point with Android 8, a clean top bar with easy notification overview? Whats even the point of putting a number on the app icon.

They need to fire the person who tought this was a great idea. Cuz this is just plain dumb.

I suggest you provide feedback to Samsung. Google's implementation of Android didn't even have the notification dots on apps until 8.0, so what you have is a step in the "right" (for some) direction in that regard.

Do I need to contact Samsung directly, through complaints/customer service? Or is there like a special place/site for Samsung Android related stuff?

We have a Galaxy S8 section of the forums here, but I don't believe there are any representatives of the company visiting and contributing there (that's not to say they don't have someone crawling forums reading the complaints or suggestions). https://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-and-s8-plus/

You may be able to provide Samsung feedback right from the device, but you are otherwise going to need to email the company - https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...om%2Fus%2Fsupport%2Fcontact%2F&token=xjImjSaM

i dont even get a dot - i dont understand why you would want a phone that doesn't tell you you have a notification whats the point!!!! is there any phones that dont support oreo? think i need a new phone :(

Yea I still cant understand why they would remove such a good and basic feature. And even after all these months, they still havent fixed the problem. 90% of Galaxy users are complaining, there were a lot of threads on the Samsung Forum. But it seems like Samsung doesnt care at all since they either respond with bull**** or just delete the thread. Cant believe Samsung is basically doing an "Apple" on us.
