Wow

great stuff here in this forum ... what can i say that has not been already said ... i just recently bought the HTC Droid Eris and love it ... my favorite app is Waze Navigation ... great to have navigation on the Eris until the 2.x update comes so we Eris owners can have the Google Nav. App ... and yes Waze does turn by turn talking directions as you drive ... i had an HTC Touch Diamond which my wife now uses and I had TomTom on that phone so I was very glad to see the Waze free app available for the Eris from the Market for Android (also check out Waze.com for all the info) ... life is good when you have an android fully customizable phone ... thanks again for starting this site and for all the great info i have already found here ... WOW great job!

I think they will. As Android is around longer, HTC will want to expand their models to appeal to different preferences. To some, the full landscape makes it to big, but to others its a must.

Where is an official Google Reader application for online and offline feed reading?
Will Android support Google Docs with some kind of native client?

Nothing native - as far as I know - but from the App Store I picked up NewsRob which syncs perfectly with Google Reader and GDocs which shows me all my Google Docs. It seems as if every phone related need I have, some developer has already come up with the solution. Bless their hearts!

Another question I have is what are you looking at when you choose a particular device? I am a T-Mobile subscriber and there are several options available so I am curious what drives people to select the device they have.

As far as the physicality of the device, what I look for is how it FEELS. I want the phone to feel solid, not cheap or plasticky, not too heavy, smooth. I want the screen to cover the whole front, no "Half screen, half keyboard".

For the rest of it, customization is a MUST. The most frustrating thing is trying to change something and it's not possible. I have the HTC Eris, and I am completely delighted with it!

I jumped on the Android wagon with Sprints first Android phone the HTC Hero. The Sense UI is great. The customization can be overwhelming at first but I love it. The Google integration is amazing. My favorite app. is Chomp SMS( at least the one I use the most ). There are so many good apps out there, and the widgets are wonderful. My wife is using a BB, she had a touchscreen before and hated it. I think some people can and some can't handle the touch interface. In my opinion the Android devices provide the most personal and smooth interface. I love that I don't have to pull the battery like my wife does.

I am new to android. I previously had a palm pre and now i have a htc hero. I like the fact that you can customize the phone the way you want to. The sense ui is a great ui. i also like the fact that there are so many apps to choose from...

[*]It seems to me that Google doesn't spend much time advertising or promoting Android devices and leaves it up to carriers and manufacturers. Will Google take more of an interest in promoting Android in 2010?

I definitely don't think Google will. There's plenty of buzz about it just based on the advertising by the carriers, as well as the name and reputation that Google has built for themselves. Case in point, I just looked 8 inches up on my screen, and I see the Samsung Galaxy with Google being advertised by Bell.

Merry holidays to all! :D

I wish I could get rid of my Pre and get a hero or perhaps a Moment but nothing has worked. I don't blame Palm, it had a lot of potential but I can't take the horrible hardware and now I can't even use email correctly? Eh..I guess I have to wait until next November =/

1. I certainly believe Google will start advertising Android phones more, or atleast start speaking up about it considering their blog post the other day about splintering. They should get up front and maneuver the platform as hey see fit, the rest will most likely follow, including moto and samsung.

2. These addons should be seperated, and easily applied to vanilla OS. I don't know how it all works though. Then Google can push out updates and other companies only worry about updating their part of it, no excuses or delays like 2.1 on Sprint. But I honestly don't know how that works =P

I can actually see that being a good size too, but not sure they'll ever do it. Personally, I'd love a phone that size, but I seem to be in the minority.

Add one more to your minority! When I saw that screen through the round robin my reaction was WOW. Give it both virtual and real keyboards and I'd be in heaven. I can take the larger size if I can give up other devices in the process. Screen size is great for web browsing on a mobile device.

I'm an iPhone user - have been since the 3G model came out. However, I've had problems with AT&T's network in my area; so, I tried Verizon to see if there was a solution there to the dead spots and slow data speeds in much of my area.

I tried the Droid as my device when I opened the Verizon Wireless account. Being a loyal iPhone user, I have to say, the Android was a platform I could switch to, and the Droid was a very nice phone.

The feature of Android that really pulled me in was the customizable home screens and overall UI. I like setting up home screens for different uses, and I found I really liked making use of widgets and shortcuts that met my needs. The app drawer was also an idea that I liked. The iPhone pages that have to be scrolled through is becoming tiring. Customizing the layout is problematic at best.

As far as the Droid goes, it's speed is comparable to my 3G. I hear it's a bit slower than the 3Gs, but, I can't speak to that personally. The big plus for me was the screen. The slightly larger, but much higher resolution screen was a huge plus. The 3G screen almost looked fuzzy by comparison.

However, the rather large drawback of the Droid, from my perspective, was the keyboard. I finally have broken my addiction to having a full QWERTY keyboard on my phone. I've actually come to prefer the on-screen keyboard. I found the Droid keyboard to be difficult to use. For me, it actually just added bulk and weight needlessly to the Droid.

As a side note, the similar specs of the mysterious Nexus One, minus the keyboard, is very appealing to me. Being a T-Mobile only phone would NOT be appealing to me. I hope there are other carrier options if this phone comes to market.

In summary, I could see myself switching to an Android-based phone if the coverage was there, and the phone configuration was right. That being said, if the next Gen iPhone addresses issues such as the customization of the home screens, better screen, upgraded specs such as the processor, memory, etc..., it may just be enough to keep me happy and continuing on with the iPhone. That is, if AT&T can address some of their issues.

I think so when it comes to the Nexus especially.

No, i think people that use a certain stye of UI will either like it & continue using it with new phones. Or they will decide to try a different UI for android on their next phone.

Right now widgets on my Hero, my BF has a Pre & we both love webOS, but we both agree widgets are awesome & allow quick glances for info you want without opening a app.

Of course, the people demand it!

Integration of Google services, ease of use & the great potential for more with Android

I do wish I had widgets on my Blackberry.

Merry Christmas everyone! ..And I hope you've had a happy Hanukkah too, if you celebrated it!

Ah, it's a good season.

As an old PalmOS user since its introduction (and PalmPilot user prior), I have tried all of the smartphone OS's over the years, but typically stick with Palm. I have tried WinMo, Blackberry, Nokia etc. and currently run a Pre. Android has caught my eye for awhile now, and if Sprint had the Moment out prior to the Pre, that would be in my pocket right now. Hopefully Sprint picks up an HTC device with 4g(Wimax) and a keyboard sometime in January/February.

Which leads me to my question, as was previously posted by the Nokia gentlemen. Do you all really think having all these different UI's from the different manufacturers is a good idea? Don't get me wrong, competition creates better products, but it seems to me HTC has set the bar (rightfully so) and maybe people either "settle" for a MotoBlur/Samsung etc. or wait for an HTC device. Would Google benefit from making an agreement with HTC and using their UI "Skin" as the default android topping?

To answer your question Matt, this would be my list of what I would need hardware wise before giving Android a shot. I have tried to "settle" for other devices before, including Palm, and decided after buying a TouchPro, Treo Pro, and Pre within months of each other and not being fully satisfied that I will not purchase another phone until my list is satisfied. This list isn't in any particular order, all are "deal breakers" for the most part, some more important than others, but this is not a "pyramid list" if you will.

1. Hardware keyboard. Call it old habits, call it sausage fingers or what have you, but I have tried just about all the on screen keyboards and CANNOT find one that I can type on reliably. Even some hardware keyboards are unimpressive (droid), but I find that I can at least grow used to one, where an on screen keyboard I just cannot get used to.

2. 3.2" screen or bigger. Captive/Resistive doesn't much matter, as long as its responsive. Resistive screens have the advantage of working with gloves, pen caps etc., while captive screens can multitouch and are super sensitive. Both are nice, and I love multitouch, but taking gloves off in winter kind of sucks. Coming from mostly smaller screen PalmOS phones, blackberry's, candy bar winmo phones etc. the Pre and TouchPro spoiled me. It seems to be a curse though. Now that I have a large screen, I have started to appreciate the multimedia aspects available to a smartphone, rather than just the PIM side of things, and have gotten addicted to the larger screens. Now 3.2" seems almost too small!

3. Sprint with WiMax. Sprint has its issues like every cell company, but it is the best fit for me. Acceptable service everywhere that I use a cell (with exceptions to certain phones with poor radios/antenna's) and has the most useful features for the cheapest price. With WiMax available in every area I use my cell, and as much as I use OTA sprint internet, 4g is a must for me on my next device.

4. 600mhz processor or larger. Even older OS's are starting to lag with 500mhz processors. Just too much going on with cell phones now. 500-600mhz has become the norm, and I believe the 1ghz Snapdragon to be the norm for 2010.

5. EXPANDABLE MEMORY. Really Apple/Palm.. I know Apple loves people to upgrade for memory, and that's cool if your into that, but Palm has no excuse. I mean, this is a company that put SD card slots in the TOPS of phones for easy access. I thought I could deal with large non-expandable memory, but I cannot. The convenience of swapping SD cards for certain things, slapping them into a computer when no USB cables are available etc. is unparamount. I would rather have to remove the battery door every time than not have it, but is it really a big deal to put them on the side/top/bottom like we used to?!

6. Ram. 256mb works for now, but 512 would be a nice upgrade, especially since android runs widgets.

7. 3.5mm heaphone port
8. Micro USB. Both need no explanation.
**9. Having a quick slider button for silence and sound on is nice, but I guess having a quick icon on the home screen works just as well. This one isn't a deal breaker since only Palm does it, but it would be nice.
10. 1500Mah battery or larger. Phones do a lot now a days, even in the background. Fast processors, crazy new screens, it all eats power regardless of how well programmed the OS is. Give us a usable battery size until battery improvements are made.
11. REMOVABLE BATTERY.
12. LOUD speakerphone. I was spoiled with Nextel's and older Treo's. Motorola T505s are nice, but should be left in a car and used in large settings. I shouldn't have to turn the phone to hear someone talking when a speakerphone is necessary, or have to have 3 people bumping heads trying to watch a youtube video with sound.
13. Good camera. MP doesn't much matter (3.2 or better is nice), as long as it takes acceptable pics. Cell phone cameras aren't standalone units, and I'm not asking for a Cannon, but some cells work VERY well, and some 5mp's seem to not work well at all. Obviously this is mostly software, but make the Camera good enough to stop the "Sorry for the cell pic" posts and texts. While your at it, toss in a flash. Focus optional.
14. Good antenna. You would think this would be obvious, but some of the newer smartphones I have used lately have HORRID coverage, on ALL carriers.

That would cover most of it. I think that's my "perfect" phone for the most part, and obviously would probably not be made all in one device. I can tell you though, I will not purchase a new device without a 3.2" screen or larger, hardware keyboard, WiMax, loud speaker, large battery that's removable, SD card, 3.5 jack, and microUSB. Obviously Android will be my next phone, I really want to give that a shot, and 2.0/2,1 would be preferable (not necessary). I would LOVE for HTC to build a device like that with senseUI, but for that phone, I would deal with just about any manufacturer. Anyone for an HD2/Passion/Dragon etc. with a slide out keyboard? :-D Sorry for the length, just wanted to give my .02.

Really want to win a Droid! Currently using a Berry but willing to make the switch! Good luck everyone and Merry Christmas!
