I eventually figured out how to fix the problem this past summer. It was asking how to clear the residual crap from a failed rooting attempt on an Alcatel Idol X+. A reflash fixed it.

Oh, well then that was probably the right post (or at least the same issue). Yeah, I would've been useless for that -- no rooting experience here!

It was the only thing I knew back then of for rooting Mediatek devices. But hey, Kingo Root actually did work after the reflash for a change. I gave up on rooting though but if it ever again becomes less risky I might go back...

Yeah at the time I did use them , but stay clear now .
