Non-rooted, S-on, no recovery.img, not booting to android OS

I have an EVO 4g - 3.30, radio 2.15.00.09, S-on, no recovery image (I get the red triangle with a red ! over a picture of the EVO), I don't believe it's rooted, and I can't boot to the OS. I can't turn debugging on - remember I can't get into the OS.

I'd love to get this working again. I've been working on this for a few days and have an idea that I should be able put PC36IMG.zip on the SD card and then make some headway. Unfortunately I don't know how to put that on the SD Card since I can't seem to get the phone recognized by Windows (I don't have a card reader) and I get the following error when running "adb shell"
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

As for my experience level: I'm new to rooting the Evo. I have an iPhone 3g which has been jailbroken for almost 2 years and I rooted my wife's LG Optimus V, including custom recoveries (CWM 3.x, Xiona-CWMA), 4 ROMs, and updating the PRL. I'm not dumb, but I've definitely screwed something up.

The problems all started with AutoRoot 2.4.
If you have any ideas on how I can get past this I would love the help.

Thank you,
Joshua

I would suggest going into HBoot and try the HBoot USB option to see if that will allow you to connect to a PC. Otherwise, I would say your options are to buy a card reader (~$10-15 at Best Buy IIRC) or use another phone with a microSD slot and the ability to connect to a PC by USB. The other phone method is less desired because it will likely add a useless file structure to the SD card.

You should go with the stock ROM PC36IMG.zip method for flashing it. Then if you still want to root, try again, but use the method from thefredelement as it is a sticky in the Rooting section or follow the link in my signature.

Thanks for the suggestions illwood. I can get the phone into HBoot USB, but don't know how/what drivers to use to be able to read the card. I've installed and pulled out the HTC Sync and custom Android USB drivers so many times I think maybe it just won't work.

I'll grab a micro sdcard reader tomorrow and see what I can do. I kind of hoped there was something simple I could do and I guess there is. I just need to get my tired butt out of the office and to the store. Thanks again. I'll report back on my progress.

illwood,

Thanks again for the kick in the right direction. I've managed to fix the phone and have just finished rooting it.
