I've been reading through different threads but I'm getting lost.

I just got an LG Optimus V and I want to replace 2.2 (Froyo) with 2.3.4 (Gingerbread)

Some of the threads available haven't been updated in months and I can't tell if they are just replacing 2.2 with a custom version or something based on Gingerbread, which is what I'm looking for.

Can I get just a little help with which threads I should be paying attention to in order to root my new phone with Gingerbread?

Follow this rooting guide, when I was a noob it really helped. It's just plug'n'play.

[Guide][TOOL] How to root fastboot style. Fastest easiest way around - xda-developers

Remember to watch the Youtube video in the guide, you won't get anywhere without it.

Next, install ROM Manager from the marketplace. Now that you have superuser permissions because you rooted in the last step, you can install Clockwork ModRecovery. Go into ROM Manager, and select "Flash Clockwork ModRecovery". Then do a backup after that installs- go into ROM Manager and select "Backup Current ROM".

-------For a visual guide to the steps below, go here: [https://goo.gl/1gx8C]------------

To install 2.3.4, use aospCMod- it seems to have the biggest user base and more support. Download it from ROM Manager- click the menu button (the hardware one on every Android phone) , then select "Manual Flash Override". Select "Okay" when it asks if you're having problems using ROM Manager. Scroll down to Optimus One on the menu and select it (because that's where the Optimus V drivers are). Select ClockworkMod 3.x. Then, go into the "download ROM" section of ROM Manager, select aospCMod, and select and install the latest one.

After you reboot- voila! Do another backup. You have aospCMod with Gingerbread 2.3.4 installed. To install the Google Apps, go back into the ROM Manager, select Optimus V instead of Optimus One this time and install the Google Apps from the download section. Skip the section when it asks for you to slide out your keyboard when it's done installing.

Re: Noob is totally confused - needs a push in the right directio

Thanks guys, I feel a bit more comfortable about all this now that I'm understanding the process better.
I did try rooting yesterday but missed a step so it didn't work, I know what I need to do now so I don't expect any issues with that when I get home later on.

I'm using the guides you've mentioned as well as this one because as far as I know this will give me the latest rom update (CM7 2.3.4 if I am correct)

So to clarify this is the basic process I should use after rooting:

  • Test with TitaniumBackup, then create a backup - I'm assuming this creates a backup of the stock Virgin Mobile rom just in case I get FUBAR
  • Run Superuser app - This app basically protects me from being constantly in root, correct?
  • Install custom Clockwork recovery 'aospCWMod-VM670-20110531.img'
  • Backup (again?) using the custom recovery previously installed
  • Flash with 'aospCMod-VM670-20110601' - the most recent update I believe; 'aospCMod-VM670-20110601' - (Gingerbread 2.3.4?)
  • Let phone reboot and pray I didn't just create a $130 pocket weight!
I was also wondering what Gapps is and if I need it. That's optional right? What does it do?
Other than that am I missing anything in the process or do I pretty much have the basic process down? Any additional precautions I should take?

Sorry for all the questions, but I think I have it down.

Titanium backup backups your apps, doing a backup in recovery backs up EVERYTHING in case ya dun goof.

Ok right now I have ROM Manager installed but it doesn't show any ROM's available to download like it does in this link (last 2 images).

It's only showing 'Extras' and 'Google Apps'. I don't even know how to download the latest ROM 'aospCMod-VM670-20110601' because the link from XDA's read me just goes to the ROM Manager download, and not the actual ROM file.

What do I do from here?

Re: Noob is totally confused - needs a push in the right directio

Don't have the link handy, but search for aospcm7 vm670-20110601.zip. It should give you a download from mediafire. Download it and move it to the root of your sd card (not in any folder) with a file manager. Then install through your recovery. Don't forget to flash the gapps.zip or you will get stuck at the android logo. You'll need that zip for the market and other google apps.

Re: Noob is totally confused - needs a push in the right directio

Thanks that helps out a ton!

I just flashed with Gapps through ROM Manager. It rebooted the phone, ran some code on the screen, then booted back up.

How do I know Gapps was flashed successfully before I move on to flashing with aospcm7?

You should be flashing aosp first, then immediately after without booting, flash the gapps file.

Re: Noob is totally confused - needs a push in the right directio

Ok well I thought I did it right but I'm stuck at the Android screen....here's what I did:

  • Put both aospcm7 vm670-20110601.zip and gapps-gb-20110325-signed.zip in the root directory of my phone's SD card
  • Rebooted into Clockworkmod recovery
  • Wiped cache
  • Installed 'aospcm7 vm670-20110601.zip'
  • Installed 'gapps-gb-20110325-signed.zip'
  • Rebooted
Now it's been about 5 minutes and still stuck at the android logo

Ok I'm back in ClockworkMod Recovery, but now what?

Ok I'm back in ClockworkMod Recovery, but now what?

In mounts section of recovery wipe data and system, i wipe every option available except for sdcard obviously. Next go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache. Then I would just reflash them since it doesn't take much time.

Re: Noob is totally confused - needs a push in the right directio

You guys f-in rock!

It loaded up and so far it looks like all is good with Android 2.3.4

Again thanks to each and everyone that helped in this thread and any others I may have posted some stupid question to!

Now the fun begins :D

Re: Noob is totally confused - needs a push in the right directio

No problem lol. Everyone started out not knowing much. Well most of us, there are a few who knew it all from the beginning. ;) Have fun playing with your phone.

Re: Noob is totally confused - needs a push in the right directio

Clearest instructions anywhere! I did encounter a forked path along the way... When looking for the aospcm7 vm670-20110601.zip mediafire link, I could only find aospCMod-VM670-20110601 links. Are they the same? That cm7 isnt the same as CMod, and I don't want my new phone to end up in a world of hurt!

If I fail at searching, please slap me (with the link!)

Edit:

Not the same. CMod is CyanogenMod. Oh well, neat. :)

Re: Noob is totally confused - needs a push in the right directio

IHO/BACKside is actually successor to the ath3nos build for Optimus S. It may be a new ROM, but it's really starting where ath3nos left off. Ath3nos build is for Optimus S, whereas this is built for Optimus V. The source updates are by the same person (blarf)) I think the only major issue remaining is BlueTooth
