As title states, I'm a noob to all things Android. (Background info for my device: android 2.2.1, 16GB SD Card, and using an Apple MacBook Pro with 10.6.8). I've been searching on here, and have found some great information, but i'm still a bit confused. I'm attempting to root my phone so I can move more stuff (apps, etc) onto my 16GB SD Card b/c my phone is constantly giving me the "low on space" message & its quite irritating.

Last night I downloaded the Gingersnap Root Utility for Mac and set out to get this dang phone rooted! Before starting, I enabled USB debugging per the instructions and I "rebooted" my phone (I held the top button until I got the option to power off, which I clicked; then after being off a few seconds I pushed the top button again to turn back on...is that the proper way to "reboot"?). I then connected the phone to my laptop and ran the Gingersnap Utility. **When I plugged in my phone it asked if I wanted to enable USB storage, and I said no...should I have said yes??**

Gingersnap finished, and then I went to the market & downloaded Titanium Backup (TB). When I tried to run TB it said my phone wasn't rooted! Please help!

If necessary, I have access to a PC running Win 7 that I can try instead of the MacBook Pro.

Thank you! :)

Use GingerBreak, it's an apk you load onto your /sdcard, then install like an app, and run it. It'll reboot if successful. Then use 'terminal emulator' app and type 'su' at the prompt to see if you're granted super-user (root) access. If so, proceed with flashing a recovery image to flash a custom ROM.

From the description in my OP, did I reboot the phone properly, or is there some other way? Also, when plugging into a computer, does it matter if USB storage is on or off?

Thank you!

I believe you need to enable usb debugging in the applications-development setting. Out you can try this.

Yes rebooting your phone is basically just shutting it down and turning it back on.
The usb storage thing is so you can transfer stuff from the computer to the sd card via usb.
During rooting process no usb mass storage should be turned off so the phone can access the sd card.

Gingerbreak should reboot your machine automatically if rooting was successful (can even be done without plugged into the PC, the PC is only needed to copy the .apk file to the /sdcard). It is separate from whether USB shows up or not (that depends on if you have the LG drivers installed on your PC).
