OK, so yesterday i gathered the guts and flashed packaged SC 2.8 provided by DroidXcon's thread. Thanks to him, Adrynalyne, Cory, and others that have layed out the procedures to make it easy to for this to be accomplished. So far, everything is great and it's nice not have all the Verizon bloat in my phone. A couple of questions though...

1. What it Touch Wiz?

2. When I turned on the music player for the first time, it gave me two choices, so I chose the original one that I had used when the phone was stock. While it was playing a song, I clicked on an option to "use a ringtone", which caused it to force close. I have not been able to get this music player back. The other one works, but I liked the original better because of more options with the equalizer. How do I get it back?

3. Are there other options as far as the clock and alarm? I like the new clock, but the old alarm had additional options for the snooze, although what I didn't like about the old alarm was that it would snooze automatically after 1 minute, while the new one doesn't. I also liked the slide to snooze or cancel of the old alarm. Just trying to get the best of both worlds I guess...

4. I noticed a few patches for the SC 2.8, but there was some note about using Clockwork 2.x to install them, and not using Clockwork 3.0. How do I know which Clockwork version was installed in my phone?

5. What do I do with the update.zip file that's sitting on my SD card?

6. After only a half a day, the battery is going fast. How can I improve that? Today, I shut off the GPS to see if it'll help, but so far, after having the phone unplugged for 30 minutes from a full charge, I have lost 10%.

Thanks in advance for the replies. And thanks again for the support and information provided here. It is great!

1) Touchwiz is the stock launcher or user interface (ui) that came on your phone when you bought it. Remember the shaded black bottom of your screen with the 4 icons? That was part of Touchwiz. See the smaller white box in the center bottom of your screen with the 3 icons? That is part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) launcher or ui Adrynalyne includes in his superclean ROMs.

2, 3, 4, & 5) There are patches for both of these in Adrynalyne's post here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...-rom-superclean-2-8-ea15-eb01-eb16-based.html. Put the patches on your sd card the same way you put update.zip on your sd card and then follow the directions in the link in my signature. Leave the update.zip where it is, it is the key to get into clockworkmod recovery (cwm) and you will see why you need it and how it works when you follow the directions in my link. Once you are in clockworkmod recovery you will be able to tell which version you have by looking at the top of the screen at the version number and also by the color of the text. Red is 2.5.1.x, orange is 3.0.0.8. If you haven't used the app Rom Manager, you should have red. And if you haven't used Rom Manager, most of us are staying away from it for the time being as it really is not of much use for Fascinate owners right now.

6) This has been a huge issue on the leaked Froyo builds both DL30 and EB01. The only thing that can be said about it is YMMV (your mileage may vary.) Most people have reported poor battery life, some have reported great battery life. Once Verizon releases the official Froyo and the indie developers here get their hands on the source code, they will be able to put out some custom and undervolted kernels which should help with battery life. In the meantime you can try the methods discussed in this thread. Check out some of my posts toward the end of the thread, as the method I described has worked for a lot of people, myself included:

Also since you are new to rooting it would be a good idea to do some reading to increase your knowledge base:

Thanks so much for the reply. I'll work on this some more and see what happens. So far, very pleased with the outcome of my 'hacking' :D

Thanks again Landshark:). I was able to boot into red cwm and got my music player back, as well as the original alarm, although I think I'm going to stick with the new clock that was part of 2.8 because the auto-snooze on the original alarm really irritated me.

I have read the thread about battery life and downloaded the terminal emulator like you suggested. Later tonight when I have chance to get my phone recharged, I'll give that a try. The battery has settled down a bit a the day has gone on. I have already read the threads in the links you provided multiple times in gathering the information I needed to attempt my root in the first place.

Again, so far, I'm loving the changes. The phone is fast, no lags, the GPS pops up immediately, and it looks so much better without Bing and the Verizon bloat :p!!

You're welcome. And another thing to keep in mind about running the bstats in terminal emulator, it took a few days of running the phone and charging it up for me to really see some results in battery life. So don't think something went wrong if you don't see immediate improvement in your battery life the first day.
