My phone is a Pixel 7 Pro running Android 13, build TQ3A.230605.012. The phone was rooted quite a while ago and I disabled everything that allows the phone to update the OS and apps. However, for the past few days, at around 6:00 pm EST, a window appears on the phone indicating "Restart now to finish the update - Your system is 4 days out of date".

What the heck is going on??? Needless to say, I am truly scared that if I restart my phone, then root will go away. Please advise me as to what the heck is going on.

It might be a Google Play system update, which is separate from the monthly security patches. Go to your system settings, then Security & Privacy>System & Updates>Google Play system update, and see if that's prompting you.

Thanks for replying.

I went to Security & Privacy>Updates and I see the following: Security update with a yellow exclamation point and Google Play system update with a green check. When I tap on Security update, it informs me that a ‘System update available’ and has a restart button. When I tap Google Play system update, the button says ‘Check for update’ and there is nothing.

Play system update needs a reboot to be fully applied. Push restart and check for more updates afterwards.

The only way root is going away if you flash the stock firmware .

Today, again, the phone showed the window that indicated ""Restart now to finish the update...". So, based on what was written here, I clicked the button. The phone updated to Android 16 and I lost root - making the phone essentially useless.

Is this grounds for a class action suit? I specifically indicated not to update the phone, but it updated. Google is so incredibly diabolical...

I'm guessing you lost root due to the other partition wasn't rooted. Just a guess...I could very well be wrong.

Probably not.

I specifically indicated not to update the phone, but it updated. Where do you think you indicated not to update? You clicked the button to finish the update process. If you wanted a sure fire way to not update, you can flash a custom ROM to the phone. But I think you would need to flash it to both partitions? It's been a long time since I rooted last. The last phone I rooted was the Galaxy S3 (that wasn't a typo).

The phone updated to Android 16 and I lost root - making the phone essentially useless. That's a bit melodramatic, isn't it? The phone can't be completely useless. Root access is almost overrated now. What do you need root access for?
