I rooted my nook several months ago via SD Nookie and it was working just fine.
I hadn't used it in some time and decided to boot it up for the kids.

I noticed when I turned on WIFI connectivity, the nook would freeze then boot into the
standard nook ROM.

Anyone know what causes this problem?

If I need to use a new Android ROM, would people recommend FROYO or Honeycomb.
I'd want good performance out of the Nook.

None of the above. Froyo is very outdated and has many bugs. Honeycomb is even worse. CM7 a gingerbread rom is the way to go. Use the 7.1 stable. It can be installed to your internal memory or it can be run from an SD card. More info here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=126431

It was working fine a few months back, don't know why it stopped, but I'll go with your suggestion. Will try gingerbread.
